I found a company nearby my home that is supposedly hiring. From my investigation they only run 5 trucks. They do heavy haul moves. I have 5 years experience in heavy haul. Their ad says they want 10 years experience. Seems a little unrealistic for a small town, but maybe they will find someone with more experience than me? I called them a couple times and sent a resume. I didn't really speak to the man in charge though. How should I proceed? I'm thinking of paying them a visit in person. Bad idea or not? Any other suggestions?
I really want this job!

What ZYK said. You have nothing to lose but a few hours. Have you got any pictures of some of the heavy loads you have hauled? Remember they are better than a 1000 words. And don't forget, sell yourself. Because you in the end have to make them want to grab you up before their competition gets you.
Best of luck to you.Strider Thanks this. -
you can call first and inquire but do not forget, you only sent in a resume`, you never filled out an application, so when (or if) you call, you CANNOT ask the status of your application..........did you mail in that resume`, did you go in person and hand it to someone...??? in person would have been much better, as it would have also allowed you a chance to fill out that application......
or go and visit, be the "usual polite self" one would be at an "un-announced" walk-in........
but as you say, they WANT 10 years experience, and how long ago was your 5 years doing this...?????
if up to today, maybe they will give you a probationary chance.....
but it only takes ONE person with what they want, and he don't got to be from your town....and he's in....... -
I heard on Road Dog on Sirius where a O/O was gonna hire someone to drive one of his trucks but when the guy showed up for the interview, his pants were so far down his butt that you could see his underwear. The man said he asked the guy to leave and go change then come back b/c it was inappropriate to dress that way w/woman in the office. He said the man threw a fit and cussed at him and left. The man said the next person that came in that was qualified and dressed nicely, he gave that person the job. So appearance is definitely a great way to express yourself. Dress like a slob or a thug and more than likely, you are not gonna take care of the truck or probably not take your job serious. Dress professionally and most companies look at you as a respectable human being who values your job and the people around you.

100% truth there,my mother in law used to work for the state employment office ,
She said the first time you see someone is very important.
With the internet most of the time you don't get to meet anybody.
So i say go to them and let them know (promote yourself) tell them you can do the job.
Have all your info with you and just maybe he or she will give you a try!
When i got my job ,the hireing manager asked if i had questions and i said said yes(no they where not new trucks but questions that involve the job you are there to get).
There is a drywall supplier that has a job (local, home everynight weekends off) for someone with a classb or classA cdl driver,it pays $13start-up to$16 a hour and he told me the quality of drivers (comeing in with grease on them ,hair that is uncombed) has been awful.
So look good (or in my case look as good as you can) and show them you have good manners and your the man that can get the job done right !
Oh yeah dress for the job,a nice polo tucked in with nice jeans and shoes ,would be ok.
I know a guy who wore a suit and tie to run a forklift,he did get the job but he was qualified.
But don't overdress or under dress. -
definitely show up in person, find out who the guy in charge is. you can get this job! 5 years experience is definitely competitive and safe to say you know a thing or two. if it comes down to it offer to work for a day with out to prove you got what it takes.

Keep on checking in will show determination. Dress nice but do not over dress. I think I just learned my lesson from over dressing by wearing a shirt and tie tucked in military style button's lined up and all with a double windsor knot. Needless to to say, when I walked in (this was a gas drilling company) and no one was dressed even close to nice. Most guy's were dirty and one other wearing a button up shirt and the hiring manager (female) was dressing in a T-shirt and jeans not tucked in. I think they took as a good impression but I got the feeling they felt I was to "clean" for the job and showed maybe I was afraid to get dirty. My first time wearing a tie to an interview so I guess it was trial and error. Dress accordingly.
As well as selling yourself. That is very important. Answer everything but don't go over board. It's not what they can do for you, it's what you can do for them. Good luck! -
i once heard a saying "dress for the job you want"
come to think of it, i think it was a mens warehouse commerical lol -
Seen people with the pants crotch down by their knees.
I mean why!? Seriously? Why? It's about enough to make my brain go into convulsions just seeing people do that.
