If I am dreaming about being at work, is that line 4 time??? And if I am sleeping in a sleeper and dreaming about work what line should that be on???? And would it make a difference if I was dreaming about driving or about loading and chaining??

How about talking about work? and here I mean for real, wide awake talking to dispatch about the next day's run, or clarifying some matter of billing. Lets say a 5 minute conversation. Would that technically be line 4 time? And would my 10 hour break have to restart the minute I hung up the phone?

It would have to be at least 7 1/2 minutes in order to log it.

Ok for some reason my quotes are not Quoting? I think it is the alien in me:biggrin_25524:

Anyhow! Calinn: This question is asked below and answered by DOT

Question 5: Do telephone calls to or from the motor carrier that momentarily interrupt a driver's rest period constitute a change of the driver's duty status?

Guidance: Telephone calls of this type do not prevent the driver from obtaining adequate rest. Therefore, the FHWA does not consider these brief telephone calls to be a break in the driver's off-duty status.

Keep in mind though if you killed a bus of kids, they will be checking your cell phone records, qualcom etc. There fore you do not want to spend 10 hours on the phone when you should be breaking. You can be off duty during your 10 hour break so you can talk on the phone. Now if lets say your log witch (I am an auditor so I have the right to say that, you don't:biggrin_25513: ) calls you

    Here is another:
Question 30: If a driver is required repeatedly to respond to satellite or similar communications received during his or her sleeper berth period, does this activity affect a driver’s duty status?

Guidance: Yes. The driver cannot be required to do any work for the motor carrier during sleeper berth time. A driver who is required to access a communications system for the purpose of reading messages from the carrier, responding to certain messages (either verbally or by typing a message), or otherwise acknowledging them, is performing work. For the purpose of this guidance, “repeatedly” means a pattern or series of interruptions that prevent a driver from obtaining restorative sleep during the sleeper berth period. [Editor's Note]

If you accept a load and get off the qualcom that is fine. Staying on there for 10 hours talking to the DM is work.

Technically, you would be correct, but why split hairs in that manner?

You know what brought this up is I typed out a letter to our safety department explaining something about a log I did and faxed it to them during my 10 hour break. And I was just wondering if they would be alert enough to wonder why I didn't log line 4 time somewhere around the time I sent the fax. I serously doubt they would say anything but, I know if it was me doing the logs I might have caught it.

I doubt they do, but I do hear some will be like that. Me personally if it is phone calls, computer, talking to me and DOT can't "prove" you was doing this then why log it. Some drivers just over think it and get to technical which this causes them to lose money

I had a guy who would log 15 minutes if his dm sent him a message. If he typed a message etc. I mean this guy logged EVERYTHING.
