I am just curious what the current economical state is for the trucking industry? I have read the number per statistical data. I am more curious about from a truckers view. My dad drives only on weekends and gets quiet a few miles so he isn't struggling when he drives. Current economical state (truckers view)? Also, feel free to talk about certain companies. Thanks ladies and gents.

it's not much better now than a year or two ago. experienced truck drivers are unemployed due to lay off's and closings. there isn't much need for student drivers as some would think. trucking always takes a hit in hard economic times. if factories are closed, there isn't much freight to move...right....???

pay is not up (by much) many trucking companies have asked the employee's to take pay cuts or just took away pay scales and some benefits. a co-worker of mine has told us his company had a pay cut across the board (EVERYONE).......there isn't as much freight as there was, and he hauls for Ford and Chrysler out of Mass.......

some trucking companies have cut back on equipment purchases. why buy any equipment if the economy does not support such spending...???

the sates (some) are cutting back on truck driver training classes.

so what DO YOU THINK the "current economical state" is......??????????

From a different point of view,I have a family member with 3 yrs experience,& he has been looking for work since 10/15. In the last 2 months,he has turned down 7 skateboard jobs & granted,3 I would say were bad news, but in the worst case scenario,if he were in the world all alone,he would not starve. We live in the upper midwest by the way.

It doesn't sound very good. Isn't that with all industries though? Where I live there are piles of factories and such that had never laid people off after being in business for 30+ years and now its impossible to find a job or keep one very long. Is the trucking industry usually not hurting when all others are? Like I said earlier my dad has no problem with miles so no point in talking to him about it. Also my grandfather sold his trucks in the 90's so he wouldn't know either. I appreciate the reply.

Oh, now those are really rare! Probably have to special order or get them custom made! Going to be pricey too!

Sorry,my point was,of COURSE the economy sucks,I cant remember anything like this since 1981 when my military enlistment was up.....HOWEVER,and I am only speaking for myself,I feel relatively secure in driving a Big Truck, and I hope this does not sound like I am bragging, but myself & OTHERS I know are getting all the miles we can handle.
