Week after week I notice the wannabees come on this forum and mostly ask the same questions over and over. Some even go as far as telling everyone a little bit about themselves, their history, dreams, etc. All well and fine. The biggest problem that I see in about 50 percent (plus or minus a little) of them, is that their writing skills are very poor. Now I am sure some of that can be attributed to some of them not being very well versed in using a computer, but even that is not a good excuse.
But what it seems like to me (yep, my opinion) is a lack of basic education on their part, and probably a pretty good chance that they are going to fall on their face in their quest to become a driver. Now I know forum decorum is to refrain from bashing someone because of how they write. Most of the participants on this forum usually answer their questions to the best of their ability. From time to time, I will see that somone might suggest that they might want to seek further schooling before entering the profession (very tactfully).
In this new age of communications, I think that someone just starting out is going to have to be pretty smart to survive in the industry. And before it is pointed out to me, I realize that there are many in the industry presently that, let's say, are somewhat challenged in the area of cognitive skills. Yet they have been successful in their career. All well and good, but most have been in the industry for a long time and entered into driving when being able to handle the truck was about the only qualification.
My point is, how do we best point out to these men and women that they might want to obtain a more solid general education before jumping into the truck driving field? I do not point this out saying that they might not be excellent at handling the truck, but if you can't think things through or handle paperwork, you are most likely doomed to failure.
    There, that's my rant

if a person has an high school diploma, one has to question THAT school, it's teachings and the students attention span. some schools "pass along" people under that "no one get's left behind" slogan....

if a person has a GED, that person just barely made it as well.

all one has to do is demonstrate at whatever reading, comprehension, writing levels set by the individual states board of education. it DOES bother me too, that children from India, China, Japan, and other foreign countries do so well in school compared to the American children.

there just isn't any "pressure" (of sorts) from american parents for their children to do better in school. in many foreign countries, education is number 1 priority, where here in american (it seems), drop off kid at school go to the gym, work or out with the guys/girls while i play tennis, and let the school do its job, i'm a parent, it ain't MY responsibility"....

in the end, if "johnny can't read"........who's fault is it...??? johnny's, the parents, the school's.....???

"johnny" for constantly texting his friends, when he SHOULD BE learning..??

the parents who DO NOT make the kids do homework and apply themselves in school..??

or the school's for "passing along, so no one get's left behind"....?????

as long as anyone "passes" enough state level testing, one receives a diploma or a GED........and beyond that..........

the poor spelling, sentence structure, and correct words, will never, ever be used again.

the education of children from (say) when we were in school dozens of years ago, will always be better, compared to the lack luster results of todays' (American) children.....

You have to realize to that there is a bit of generation gap we have here. With the new electronic generation nothing is capitalized and everything is abbreviated. There is practically a whole new language coming from it. With communication moving at the speed of light I think a few old school rules are going to be left out to save time. Think about the english you speak now from the original queens english. It's a little bit shortened up and with more slang. Think about how much quicker you can write today then back in the 1700's. Any way don't mean to get all "History Channel" here, just an observation.

Gonebutnotforgotten, you have plenty of mistakes in your post. Not bashing you but don't be a kettle caller!

And about once or twice a month, some jackwad complains about someone else's writing skills...or lack thereof. Not everyone has the gift of good spelling and composition skills, but it seems like some of those who think they do like to whine about those less fortunate rather than simply skip over what they consider to be incomprehensible dreck. Composition and spelling are not necessarily reflective of intelligence or usefulness.

Perhaps if some of the more gifted people in the area of written English had better reading comprehension skills, they would peruse existing threads on this very subject and comment on them rather than start yet another tirade about it.

OMG, once again here we go with the "don't ya all think poor grammar should be areason to NOT drive?" I am SO SICK of people who think they can sit behind a computer screen and JUDGE other people.

Maybe some posters on here are not quite as "up to speed" as YOU think they should be OH WELL. I know people with actual PROVEN IQ's over 130 and they are not smart enough to poor p*** out of a boot with the directions on the heel.

As for the great teacher or parent debate, thats been hashed over a million times too. WHY not quit with the JUDGING of others and try to be HELPFUL?

    so what! so what!
I know some drivers here on this board that may not have the grammatical skills but are masters at their trade of driving a truck. Yeah, sometimes it may get annoying, but as mentioned above, you can't and shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

I believe what you're referring to is the new fad called "texting". It's very structure points out it's failings and it's ultimate demise. Far from constituting a New Language, it's relegated to just another "cool thing"; soon to be replaced by another "cool thing". Remember "Valley Speak" or "Jive Talk"? Language has the ability to convey complex or technical things in a clear manner. somethingnotposiblewiththisdrek.

Now I must vehemently protest your classification of a GED with "just barely made it". This conclusion is a fallacy and a canard, just as the idea that a certain document (ie a "high school diploma" or "college degree") is a measure of a person's worth or value to society. Life's circumstances sometimes preclude the successful pursuit of "Higher Education", yet they can be very productive and valued members of society. Myself had to leave the educational system at Grade 10; yet I compose in both poetry and prose and have even had some of my poor attempts included in publications by more accomplished writers by their request.

I furter point out the postings of our friends like southernpride. While perhaps not meeting "standards" this man is a font of valuable wisdom and experience. Each of his posts is a worthwhile read and I too have learned much from him.

I laud and applaud those who, when life permits, gain a GED for whatever reason (better job, etc). However, at my stage in life, such would be only for vanity's sake; my run nears it's end and I'm long past caring about other's judgement.

    'Nuff said y'all?
