Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. My insurance company (Geico) would'nt insure it because it was previously registered commercial. I went to GMAC and they wrote liability only on it for $900 a year. I hired a driver that was out of work and originally from NY, and he brought it back with no problems. I couldn't do it for a couple of reasons: 1) haven't driven a semi in a long, long time, and NY with traffic, possible icy roads, etc,. were beyond my abilities..don't want to kill myself or someone else, and 2) I'm a 55 year old single dad with a 7 y/o son and work 6-7, 10 hour days a week running my boats. I'll just have my fun driving on Florida roads that I'm familiar with. Funny thing is, a week after I bought this truck I found one that had already been converted to a pickup. The guy that painted all the vehicles in the film "Fast and the Furious" painted it, it has a 48" sleeper, custom bed, 420 hp Cat, allison auto trans,...really really nice. I ended up buying it also. So now I have the truck from NY and have no use for it. I know that single axle trucks are in low demand, but this one is truly a nice truck. Its something that I would sell to a friend. If you know of anyone looking for a "starter" type of truck, this one may fit the bill. I'd even finance it to the right person. Got a bunch of pics if you know of anyone. The Pastor of my church has let me park it in his lot, but I don't want to "wear out my welcome" Thanks again.

Donate or tithe a nice amount to the Pastor. I used to park a vehicle in the Moose Lodge parking lot and even though I was a member back then, I still gave them $500 (for a year) towards allowing me to park. Since I wrote it to the lodge and not the organization it wasn't deductible but the money stayed within the lodge and actually went towards a new $1200 fire suppression system they needed for the kitchen.

Funny thing too, once I gave them that money...the guys would kinda keep an eye on it and chase off kids if they got too curious.

Currently, I am paying $50/mo for a parking spot at a close by 'U-Store it" type of lot (only better). They won't allow a trailer since there is no room but I have already hooked up with a local transport company that will let me park either one or both in their lot for about the same amount.
Problem is (as some of you know) my truck is at Kenworth MORE than with me and there is nothing better than paying for parking and not using it.

    bigfishxxl Thanks this.

I am in the process of taking over my father's trucking business here in Osteen FL.
We only travel in FL, GA, AL, MS, LA, SC, NC.
95% of the mileage is in FL.

I'm 45, and just got my CDL Class A on 12/1/10. I drove for a year on my learner's permit with my father. Before that, in 94 - 95 I drove a straight truck with a cargo trailer on my Florida Class D. And before that in 92 I drove a tractor trailer in the military.

AS you probably know, I'm having a hard time finding insurance as I just got my CDL.
So far Progressive is the only one that will write me a policy for o/o under my own authority.

Anyone in a similar situation that was able to get insurance?

The driving for 2 years for another company is not an option for me as my father has built up a customer base that are willing to keep their business with us.

    If your referring to me.
    They quoted me $12,153./yr
So if you ask me they are frigin extortionists cause they know no one else will touch a driver with a new CDL.

And before anyone asks I am 45 and have a clean MVR.

Actually the high rate from Progressive is not because you dont have experience. It is the state that you are in and particularly the zip code. All insurance companies have higher rates in Florida. 12k is actually average for your location. Progressive is the largest truck insurer in the nation. They insure more trucking business than all the rest of the insurance companies combined. Anyway, for a better rate, find a link somewhere on this web site that will take you to a form where you can request a quote. I think you will get a better rate if you do this.
