If I understand Swift's CDL program correctly, I either pay the $3900 at the academy, or start paying Swift the first 13 months, and then am reimbursed the second 13 months. If I sign up for the 26 month "paid" training at the beginning, but after completing the academy training, I decide that I want to go somewhere else and I pay off the tuition, I would not be obligated to drive for Swift in any way? My plan is/would be to drive for Swift in their flatbed division, but if I have to wait for a month after orientation for a mentor, I may want the option to seek opportunities elsewhere. I would be concerned about Swift DAC'ing me if I decided to leave.

If you can afford to pay the $3900 than why not go to a college? Than, you have no obligation to anyone.

My wife is going to a college and it is only costing $1063

For a variety of reasons, Swift is one option. I am considering a local cdl school also.

need to clairify something...UNLESS IT HAS CHANGED....you dont "sign up" for a 13 or 26 month "option". once you upgrade to "solo" (or team) the tuition starts to come out. Stay at Swift AS A COMPANY DRIVER for 13 months, and your tuition is paid. Stay with them another 13 months, and schooling is totally free. If you leave before the 13....you owe the whole $3900 amount. If you leave after 13 months, you dont 'owe' anything......you just dont get back what they'd have paid you. (since after 13 months, your half AND their half is paid).

I've heard some drivers who look to drive for someone else, will ask the next company to cover the tab for tuition, and sometimes they do.....with a catch, naturally. That way you're out from under that 'burden'.

Well, you sort of have it correct. There isn't an option of 13 vs 26 weeks. Once you're off your mentor's truck and in your own they'll begin make payroll deductions each week. They'll take out a full payment and then at the same time they'll reimburse you half of that payment. By the end of 13 months the loan will be paid off with you having been reimbursed half of what you paid in. Then for the next 13 months Swift will reimburse you the other half payment each week. So at the end of 26months you'll have been totally reimbursed.

Now, you can leave at anytime but you'll have to pay the loan to Swift and Swift isn't going to reimburse you. But you do NOT have to stay at Swift.

To those who are telling me to just go to a private school, etc", I know that is an option. It isn't why I am asking the question that I am on Swift's page. I am askng about Swift! Thanks Nana and Dick. Uh, Dick, wouldn't I only be responsible to pay the remaining amount owed If I left before the 13 months, rather than the entire tuition?

the way i read the 'promice note', if you leave before the 13 months are up, you owe the full bill for tuition. what they've paid you for reimbursement...u keep that...but you'll owe the rest. Your bill is $3900...not $1950. they take out $75 per week. If you figure it into 3900, its 52 weeks. (but your contract will say 13 months) So lets say you stay on with swift for 15 weeks and walk....you will have paid in $1125. you will owe swift $2775 for tuition. If you 'save' your reimbursement that swift gives you ($37.50) you'll save yourself $562.50 out of that $2775. But like most drivers, they dont bother saving it....like me. you leave before the 26 months, and you basicly forefit the rebate. You dont get it...but you still end up "paying it back", in a way.

and dont worry, all the know-it-alls on here told me the same thing about going to school. Would tell me "why didn't you spend $8,000 and go to a real school." Well, it is quite simple....cause i didn't just have $8k laying around. if i did, i'd have spent it on a hooker a long time ago.....(kidding)....
