Well, sounds to me like Werner is playing a game, and your previous employer is looking to get sued.
Some suggestions, and did this years ago. Contact your home state employment office, contact the state of Nebraska as well. Make sure you document what the law says that they can release, you might also look this up online.
Then, hook up a recorder on your phone, have a friend call the old employer, pretending to be a potential employer. You will have to advise the old employer that they are being recorded, just say it's for training purposes. Then have them ask standard questions: 1. Did you work there? 2. How long did you work there? 3. Would they rehire you? 4. Why did you leave/terminated? Let the employer hang themselves.
Then call Werner and do the same. If the old employer tells your caller the samething they told Werner, call the employer back, advise them they are in violation of state labor laws and that you intend to take legal action against them, and that you have it recorded. IF they don't do what Werner claims, contact Werner and tell them you want to speak to legal, advise legal what occured and that you intend to take legal action against them. Also contact the state of Nebraska Dept. of Labor and let them know what happened, you will also have to file a claim to all parties in writing. Make certain that when you file a claim and send notice to the old employer and Werner that you send it CERTIFIED MAIL RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTED.
Not two ways about it, your gonna have to hire an employment lawyer, it won't be cheap either. However, if you hvae full documentation, you can go through the state labor Dept. to help you.
BTW, when I did this with an old employer, my mom made the phone calls and documented everything. She then had a friend do the samething and document what she was told. When I filed a claim with the State of Colorado and both of us showed up for the unemployment/slander hearing, I presented to the State documents and recordings. The mediator heard my evidence, turned to the employer and told him that he owed me treble (three times) damages and if it wasn't paid to me within 7 days the state would begin actions to seize his bank account and have me paid. They also fined him $5,000 for violating state labor practices.
Fired from Werner over bad reference

Hello, Stranger You are exactly correct. I was also terminated by CR England after three day of training. About week later, They send me a bill $4995.95.
My credit score is more than 750. Long story make a short. I paid $4000.00, because they put this bill to collection. My question is Who will control this EVIL things happen to innocent people? Lawmaker? THis is totally scam. Thanks -
