What is the best internet service to have nationwide and the best device to use with it? Want to be able to talk to the wife and kids with video.

I'm hoping it's Verizon - LOL - just picked up a MiFi (mobile hotspot) for Klingon. (it was free w/2 year contract) It will connect up to 5 different devices (since I will be teaming with him - and will at times want to use the computer at the same time). Then when you are up and on-line there is Skype - which has video - we use that now while I'm at work and he's at home. Plus Skype is FREE :D

I've been looking at a Dell XPS15 laptop with a Verizon 3g card. They have a deal right now that will install the card basically for free if you sign a 2 year contract with Verizon plus a $100 credit (not sure if that's on your Verizon bill or toward the purchase). They seem to have the best coverage but lack an "unlimited" plan. I know other providers have an unlimited data plan but their coverage is nothing compared to Verizon.

I guess it depends on where you will be primarily. I'm holding off on buying the computer until I have a definite start date for the company I'm looking at, and I'm still not sure about the contract. I'm not sure saving $250 now is worth committing to 2 years of at least $50 payments for a service I'm not even sure I'll need a year from now. They also have "no-contract" monthly payments which are the same price, or you can get a lesser plan. $50 is the 5 gb plan, and if you plan on doing video conferencing, you may need it.

Please take this with a grain of salt as I have no practical experience, I'm just relaying the limited research I've done on this particular setup.

I'm also making sure the laptop has a good wi-fi card in it, as it seems there is access to service in a lot of places.

I think Verizon is pretty good across the US, but that is a mere opinion since I am basing it off cell service. But I have been to CA, IA, NJ, NY, FL, and NM and had good service with Verizon on my cell phone. The MiFi device looks pretty dang cool, was inquiring about them and the new Samsung Tab at the local Verizon store last night.

And by all means, I would get the MiFi instead of a card...more possibilities if you have an iPod touch, or laptop(s), Tab/iPad, or other smart phone.

Interesting, I'll look into it, but wouldn't that be a USB device for a laptop? One of the things I'm looking to do is some gaming, and I've read internal cards can provide slightly better connectivity.

Yes, they probably will provide better connectivity. I dont believe the MiFi is a USB device...but perhaps it can be? It would make sense, actually

Ahh, thanks. Well that offer ends Friday anyhow, and I'm not sure I want to sign a contract to save a few bucks now.
