I have heard various opinions on this, so let me throw it out here. When you scale the load, if it legal do you just go with it, or do you try to "balance it out"? For example, I scale and the ticket says "11500/30300/33320". Ok, it's legal, but would be better balanced if I moved the wheels back about five holes. How much difference does it make on mileage, etc.? Also... too far back and it will push the steers up over 12000. Do they really give you that mysterious extra 400lbs I keep hearing about, so you can really have 12400? Not a rookie... just one of those nagging questions I have always had.

I always want as much weight on the drives as possible. It gives the truck more stabilty and the trailer has less of a chance to push the truck around.

Remember that you can't slide your tandems and exceed bridge formula though.

Well for me I never took the mysterious 400 lbs grace seriously.
As far as balancing it yes I would stretch it out some because I have found the truck rides smoother with it stretched out some. If I was going into a tight place then I would shorten it up close to the drop so that I could maneuver better. But that was me everyone has their own way....

Remember... NOT a rookie, so of course bridge laws come into it! Good idea about the drives, though. I have always felt more comfortable with more on the drives, and now I know why!

Good comments above. I never took the 400# as gospel but I'd probably try to get it off the steer axle.

In your example, I'd run with it. If I split difference between the axles, I'd only be talking about 1500# more/less. If I slid 'em back to put 3000# on the drives, I probably wouldn't feel it. I like the feeling of putting more on my drivers but I don't think a few thousand ### makes much difference.

in the winter i as well like the most on my drives--in decent weather--if it is where i can be full of fuel--and enough for 3 fat girls--then i would go for it
ummm just kidding about the fat girls---i like the scrawney malnourished ones more

I find if I even the load out my truck pulls better & I get a little better fuel economy.

Speaking of winter... I ran with this one mainly because I didn't feel like freezing my ##### off moving anything since it was legal. But it set me wondering about it. This particular truck seems to weigh a little heavy on the steers, and I don't know why. I have had it about a month, and I don't have much in the way of "stuff". It may have to do with where the fuel tanks are. Seems no matter what, I am pushing that 12000.
