The flat tire thing is pretty much a give away. But we use them, and would only ever consider using them on local trucks. We have only had one flat with a SS in 3 yrs (actually a blow out) on a loaded hopper. It happened about 3 miles from our shop so it was no big deal, rim never hit the road and never had a mark on it. It's really not any bigger deal than a flat steer tire, and how often does that happen?

They're not for everyone but they have their uses.

Everyone piles Super Singles into one category. Just like duals, it's gonna depend on the particular tire. Some have really good rolling resistance, some have really good traction. Some just plain suck.

The one bonus that can't be denied about them is that all else being equal, a Super Single equipped truck will be lighter, and that weight will be unsprung weight. That means it's a bit easier on the suspension components, as well as allowing more cargo weight.

I drove a truck with XDN2's on it for a little over a year, and while the mpg wasn't astounding, I NEVER had traction problems. Not in mud, not in snow. Guys with the same trucks with XDA's couldn't hardly get out of a parking spot in winter.

They have their place in trucking, I think. Not a bad deal for flatbedders who end up off road part of the time, and need all the lightweight parts they can get to haul heavier loads.

    Just my $0.02

They really suck in North Dakota. I ran with one company that ran them. Hated them and hated sitting on the side of the road because a tire blew. Not alot of fun when there are no shoulders to sit on. Atleast with duals I was able to get to the nearest town and get out of the way etc.

In snow, they are misserable period. It is like going from a real tire to a racing slick. Like running duals much better as they actually cut through the slush and snow and get to the ground were the SSs would stay on top off it and just pack it under the tires making things worse.

How do they "back up easier and brakes work better"?
Maybe in the right application they are good tires, but...:biggrin_25512:

I believe the brakes would work better simply because most of the drum is exposed to the cooler air. Not sure about the backing part but hey.

The main problem with super singles is most people like make blanket statements about them. Like "I had them on my truck and hated them so that makes them junk!" Or "they work great for me so I think every truck should have them". When neither of them are true. In the right application they can and are beneficial.

You'll never learn. Every type of truck product on the market is either total junk or absolutely essential to being profitable.

That is true, I'm trying to learn. This is what I've learned so far, all this is trucker CB radio or internet fact so don't doubt any of it. :biggrin_25526::biggrin_2559:

1.You can't make ANY money with classic styled truck!
2.Recaps NEVER work and should be outlawed!
3.Hauling steel coils is dangerous and should also be outlawed!
4.Super singles are the best/worst things on the market!
    5.European trucks are the best.
6.Spread axle trailers are horrible, sliding tandems are way better.
7.Lease purchase is the way to go!
8.An 80k lb truck is safe but 81k is dangerous and should never be driven.
9.$1.00 per mile freight is ok as long as your truck is paid for.
10.My truck is speed governed so yours should be too, it's only fair!
    11......................Still learning............
