Am thinking of a career change. Tired of sitting in an office and have always enjoyed the freedom of the open road. Often prefer to drive VS. fly, even when it costs more to do so. Have considered driving for a living ever since I worked in a truck stop in High School and got to listen to drivers talk of their adventures. Of course reality is different from stories. I wonder if anyone would allow me to ride along with them and let me experience the "real" scene. I figure this would be a smart start, before investing in a school or company only to find it's not for me. Am located in Utah. Easy to get along with. Would like to live on the road for a couple of weeks and experience the real thing.
RIDE ALONG Possible?

I posted a previous message about allowing me to ride along and see if I'm really a fit for the road life. Made me wonder about truckers driving in pairs. How does this work and how do you avoid getting on each others nerves when you're together so long and in such tight quarters? How does the sleeping arrangements work if no bunk? Is one driver allowed to sleep while the other drives? I was in the military, so I know that too much of anyone can get on the nerves. Just curious to hear driver feedback. Thanks!

Sleep on your back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
halfburn Thanks this. -
There was a driver that struck and KILLED his driving partner while they were running across the New York Thru-Way last winter. I am guessing they did not get along.
I don't know how team drivers do it....Christ, I don't like myself somedays let alone have to like and put up with someone else in the truck with me full time.x#1 Thanks this. -
I tried team driving, and I swear I will clean toilets barehanded before I ever do it again.

I can't imagine sharing this space with someone...I get on my own nerves!

It can be more challenging than the work itself. I will try to give some examples of some things you may have to put up with.
You could be a team driver if you don't mind putting up with odors other than your own. Sometimes very strong odors at that.
You could be a team driver if other peoples opinions don't offend you easily.
You could be a team driver if you are able to block out the stereo/CB while you are sleeping.
You may also have to be able to block out the sound of rumble strips, that can be a real challenge.
You could be a team driver if you don't mind having your driving critiqued on a regular basis.
You may end up with a very talkative partner, so be prepared to be a good listener. I just went on a trip with a guy that didn't stop talking for three days, it was like he was competing for the Guinness Book of World records in the most oral gibberish category.
I also drove with a guy that slurped solid foods. ( I didn't know this was possible until I witnessed it.) How do you slurp Steak ??
There are many more things that come into play, these are but a few.x#1, PurpleKW, Kansas and 1 other person Thank this. -
I team drove for 6 months. I decided then and there that it would be highly doubtful that I would ever do it again. Even for a husband and wife team that is an awfully small space to live in. I don't mind short trips or ride alongs. Heck, sometimes I cannot stand to be in the truck with myself. That is usually after having to secure a load in the South and fully tarp it in the Summer. I then make a bee line for a TS to refuel and shower. Then I can stand myself again.
I have no idea how mentors do it, over and over again. Even those folks that team drive and have for years. I think I would end up bludgeoning my co-driver before a year was up. I guess too many bad experiences have soured my taste for team driving.Dionysus Thanks this. -
So, I'm guessing this is why my question/request to try a ride along has received no response at all! Sounds like anyone who has actually teamed is not willing to do it again. (Seriously: How would I go about finding someone that would let me ride along a week or two?)

Offer me 500.oo cash for the week and i would consider it.
x#1 Thanks this.
