I graduated from trucking school in Dec. 2010 and travelled to Sidney MT to drive a truck in the oil fields. I have been met with blatant discrimination from many companies that obviously do not hire, and do not want to hire, female truckers. One employer told me I haven't driven enough miles commercially, even though they hired three men who graduated with me from the same school, who have no driving experience (I have a few years commercial driving experience). Secondly, because it is very difficult to find housing in Eastern Montana, many employers offer housing in "man camps." Many employers refused to hire me because they said I cannot be housed in a man camp. One employer called a friend and asked her if I could live in her apartment if I were to pay her rent. That's accommodating, but, why do I have to pay for it when men don't? One employer, who offers free housing for men, told me I would have to "go down to the bar" and ask if someone would please let me stay in their house, otherwise they would not hire me (how about if you go down to the bar and beg for a rug to sleep on, #######). These jobs were driving jobs. Most of them have a lifting requirement of up to 75 pounds. There is no reason why a healthy woman can't do these jobs.
Companies who hire brand new trucking grads but gave me the runaround:
Western Petroleum
Power Fuels
Hamm & Phillips
Lunderby Trucking
Sidney Rental
Ward Williston
Mountain State Casing
I have only found two out of hundreds of trucking companies in the oilfields who employ women drivers.

Know how many times I've seen some woman struggling with landing gear or tandems and they ask, "Aren't you going to help me?"
"Why?"
"Cause I'm a girl"
"(expletive deleted) you. Women have wanted equal rights for at least the last year, that I know of. This is us being equal, I wouldn't ask you to help me."orion3814 Thanks this. -

I never asked for help with anything when I was driving. I am perfectly capable of doing the job I had been hired to do, and always have. Pretty much mostly worked in male dominated industries too. I may be a chick, I may be small, but I can do my job, and kick backside too.
I was offered help on a couple of occasions. Once when I has having difficulties getting a load balanced (I was on my first solo load), and once when I didn't need it.
The time I didn't need it was when driving for a transporter outfit. Crappy old beat up trash truck with NO AC in the middle of summer in GA & FL. Cracked doghouse too. I was stopping every hour or so just to cool down, and a driver thought I was having trouble sliding my tandems because I was so sweaty looking.orion3814 Thanks this. -
Tell me about it, there is not one guy that rides at the barn I keep the horses at.

The reason they won't let you live in the man camp is because there is such a high occurence of rape in them when women co-habitate. You'd essentially be a law-suit/PR disaster waiting to happen.
Its a shame they wouldn't let you live off site, but I honestly can't say I know of a single company willing to make such major accomodations/exceptions for any driver when there are literally hundreds of drivers able to take the position without the headache.
Its a sad thought, but they've probably received under the table legal advice against hiring women since they can't just say outright "we won't hire you because you're going to get raped". -
Sounds like a law suit anyway! Or an ER discrimination suit! All the gooberment has to do is look at the files of drivers and count the women. They can't be that stupid but with some of these BFIs and college kids thinking they're management or union then anything in the thinking department is possible!
Now can you maybe rent a camper trailer? Until you can do something else? Or tell them they "need to" rent you one and set it up outside of anywhere but these man camps!
This is really way out side of any federally legal hiring practice! BUT get a big Buck and put it on your side and practice flicking it open! PM me (you'll need to go through a mod) and I'll explain how it's done with out one of those finger flicker things on it, which will get you in trouble with the law!!
But I would really go to the government and talk to them! The proof is in their hiring these guys from your class! Some companies just aren't that smart but be advised that IF they decide to hire you before you go the legal route they could just screw with you, have some loser tamper with your equipment so you wind up damaging something and you get fired.
That's what a BFI would do and they make movies from that crap also!
