I am looking for info on cb shop in Atlanta area I just put a cb in my pickup actually got it off ebay used cobra 29 nwstwx. Had tech look at it at pilot off I-285 he tuned it and checked out my antenna set up and said it everything looked good. but I just get a lot of static especially with rf all the way up, and on the freeway and trucks all around and I'm receiving very little cb traffic. The tech told meswing kits and stuff wouldn't fix it and he could change finals but it wouldn't fix static problem. Just wondering if anybody knew of this place.or had any other suggestions. Student now so radio won't stayin p/u I will put it in truck after school and training, but if it's a bad radio it's not gonna serve me very well.

CORRECT Finals have nothing to do with receiver noise

I would have to know what you call " STATIC " .... There is a givin amount of background noise and if your truck produces electrical noise of it''s own that would make it worse. IF you turn on your engine does the noise go up? Is it a poping sound ( sparkplugs ) or a werring noise ( Gen/Alt ) ....

There are so many kinds .....

A new radio would not help much .... Does the radio have a NB or ANL switch ??? Is it turn on of does it make thing change on/off ????

One mistake I've seen many techs make is turning the IF gain (one of the receive tuning adjustments on the circuit board) all the way up. I can't help with information about the CB shop itself, but it sounds to me like they understand at least some of the bare basics, so it might be worth stopping in again and seeing if the IF gain is maxed out. If so, have them set it about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way down. Also, when they tuned your receive (if they tuned it), did they use a signal generator, or just hook it to an antenna and tune it by ear? It needs to be done on a proper generator.

I guess thats what I'm hearing background noise SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it's not any different with the vehicle on or off gets a little louder when I turn off sound tracker and/or anl nb switch. Doesn't change that much switching from anl or nb only when I shut it off.

I'm using a 4' firestick kw4 and I've had it in different places. I had it on the bed rail in the last cargo hole and the swr meter didn't move much 1-1.3 through all 40 still had same results, riding the freeway with trucks all around and what cb traffic I do receive sounds like its far away. I have it mounted more toward front of cab now swr aren't as good but the send receive seems the same.

I have and do talk on it just seems like receive and send don't have much range, but that may just be me. The last time i had a cb was in the early 70's had to have a license then and I was stationed at Ft. Hood TX not much out there to mess with you then. Now I live close in to Atl. airport but even driving to Ackworth maybe 1hour or so form Chattanooga, or down to columbus the background level and receive still seems the same. Thanks for responding to my post I didn't mean to whine so loud or cry:biggrin_2553: so long, but I don't know anybody that has a cb so I don't know what is normal.
    Thanks Again

Thanks for your response dtb I don't know that exactly. He opened it up and took some seemed like little plugs out and then talked on it on channel 13 and watched a meter on something while turning something inside the little pod he took the stuff out of, and thats about all I can remember really, it took him about 15 min. and he was done.
I went back and he checked swr and antenna setup said it looked ok to him as far as ground and all and he couldn't get the swr's any better than where they were, didn't charge me anything to check em and didn't have any suggestions except maybe different antenna I have firestick kw4, he was more partial to wilson steel whip.

If I turn the rf gain all the way up the needle will be in the middle of the meter and the sssssssss noise is loud I can turn the squelch up till the noise is gone but I can ride all day and never hear a thing on the cb until I turn the squelch back down and then I get cb traffic but it sounds weak and if I try to talk back no response. I'll carry it back and see if he can check the IF gain and see if that helps. I do appreciate the input and I'll post back what happens.

    Thanks
    Randy

Makes sence to me .....If the IF gain was flat open you would get the hissing noise and the meter is too high ....

I went in to another shop by the T/A below hwy 16 I-75 GA. Tech said to try turning squelch all the way down, then turn rf gain down till back ground noise is gone, turn back up till I hear noise then turn up squelch. If it still seems like receive and send don't improve try antenna, then bring it in and he'd take a look at it. I got a k40 2500 center load antenna I'm gonna try it Tomorrow and see what happens.
Question if you don't mind, I was in a store today and saw a galaxy dx959 I may be getting number mixed up but isn't that kinda of top of line radio? Priced at 169.00 is that good? Brand New.
    Thanks for your help

WHAT :biggrin_25512: I hope he dosn't do brain surgery too .....
I would think the IF gain is set too high but using the RF gain to control the radio should be a last resort .....
Antennas are always a place to look at everything goes in and out through them .... I had a K40 back 30 years ago the one I had died of old age .....

The 959 is a nice radio i have had 2 of them both worked well but in my corolla was too big so i got a small midland ( mistake ) and the 959 does SSB a + when DX is rolling in ..... $169 sounds about right.

I insalled that K40 as per instructions and the static is actually better already now I can't get it tuned like the instructions say to do. 1 is more than 40 but swr's are almost all the way over way in the red thats with the whip all the way down or all the way up. Do you cut the whip off or bad coax? Now I am scared!
