training a permitted driver

If you have your own truck, you could probably teach him better one on one. If he has his permit, take him on the road and just let him ride while he learns the CDL drivers manual and watches you. The book is in sections with practice tests at the end of each. There are plenty of practice tests online. Once he got the book down, then you can teach him the PTI and then move into driving and backing and manuevering at the same time. If he lived with you on the road he could absorb much more.

Everything you need book wise you can get online.... CDL Manual, FMSCA rules and regulations, pretrip inspections. In your spare time you can work with him backing and manuevering.

I think you could put out a better driver because alot of these schools, they just herd them through. You could take your time where your son-in-law isn't pressured.

Most of the schools now charge $3000-$7000. Other big companies make you commit to employment.

What part of TN do you live at?

 

i don't think he can drive outside of the state where he has is permit.. as for swift they will help with the formal training and give him a prehire assuming he meets there requirements

 

actually, as long as he has a permit, and is with a licensed CDL driver, he can go cross country. the licensed CDL driver MUST be in the jump seat at all times however, on line 4 of his logbook. the permit holder will BE REQUIRED to have a logbook as well.

now from my point of view, the young guy OUGHT to go to a school first and get some training from there. it might very well be difficult for dad to teach his son. let's not forget, the yougin still HAS to take a state DMV road test. there WILL BE many things dad may not be able to teach, that the youngin needs.........to PASS the CDL road/skills tests....

once the kid has his license, then he can go with dad....and still while in school, on weekends perhaps..?? he can go with dad on his learner's permit for additional training/road time...

 

I went the same route. Its slower because I don't get as much backing as I'd like. I do however get alot of drive time as opposed to the schools. You just have to be certain you're both running legal logs, and you have to be in the jump seat any time he's at the wheel. I wish you the best of luck though, as I personally believe I'm getting better instruction this way than I would at a school. Real world driving beats structured stuff any day of the week. You get to see what its REALLY like.
