Thanks Chrome. Both seem like pretty good outfits but I am leaning fairly hard to Crete. Everything you indicated is a big plus; debt free is really important these days (wish I was!). I'm just impressed that you don't read much negative about Crete. Keep shoveling that snow up there in northern N.Y!

Been with Roehl 18 months hasn't been bad at all I'm doing 14 days out 7 days at home which work good for me. Crete is good 2 and the equipment is newer also. I don't know if many companies would do what Roehl did for me but here it goes I was stock in Utah because of snow and ice, Roehl got me a plane ticket and I was home for christmas then I went back after the holidays to pick up my Truck. I've heard of other drivers that they have done the same.

Hey Kiro, I am leaving for orientation on Friday and I'm looking forward to working with Roehl. You said that their equipment is better, that was my only concern with them. Can you tell me anything about what to expect as a company OTR driver.

Thanks for the post Kiro. That is a pretty cool deal and it would really work well for me for the first year. Don't know if they have that program in TX. That is definitely something I will talk to them about before I make a decision. Nice of them to get you home for Xmas too!

I know Crete is financially strong and being debt free will really help as fuel prices start to climb again. Don't know too much about Roehl's financial health. Good luck to both you and Bcso809

Let me give you the other side of the coin. My husband and I were a team with Roehl. He was injured and was on leave waiting for surgery. I decided to go solo so not to have no money coming in. He was denied WC and we now have a lawyer and are in the process of suing for benefits. Anyway when it came time for his surgery I was to be home. I have them plenty of notice. I wanted family leave of 7 days. One week before surgery I was told I had to bring the truck back to Marshfield and clean out the truck because I couldn't have the truck home for that time. We live in Missouri which meant my son would have to travel up there and back and then do the trip again when I was to go back on the road. However my DSR had this brilliant plan...if I stayed out until the day before his surgery a total of 40 days I could then bring the truck home for my "home time". You tell me the difference. Anyway instead of being home the day before I was up in Wi assigned a load that due by 10am the day of hubby's surgery. It was a 2 stop load. I didn't get finished loaded at the 2nd stop until 4:30 pm and could only go until 6pm. Take a 10 break and get to the receiver by 10am. It wasn't going to happen and I told them that even told night dispatch that it would be tight. I told my DSR that I wouldn't make it and could they rely the load so I could get home. Roehl's solution.....push the delivery back to 2pm. I was running tight and got pulled into a weigh station and they did a level 1 inspection. Which I passed but it put me behind. Again called my DSR and advised her of this and asked what was the possibility of the receiver not unloading me because I would be late. She said and I quote "They will take you as long as they know what's going on." The reality....when I got there at 3 they told me they don't take any more trucks after 2:30 and I would have to wait until the next day. Called DSR and told her....She said I guess they are slapping our hand because I was the 4 truck that couldn't make this tight run. This was a new customer acquired when Roehl brought out ORT. They got a driver to cover the load but by the time he got there I was out of hours and had to sit for 10 and then it was another 4 hours to get home. Bottom line.....I wasn't there for my husband's surgery.

Gyspy, I thank you for sharing your story. However, I believe that every company has stories like yours and it's unfortunate. I respect what your saying, but personally, if I shied away from every company I heard or read something about I'd never have a job. I mean no disrespect.

Well then there's nothing left to say. Good luck and you will find out for yourself. It's funny how it's all wine and roses when someone says something nice about a company but just let someone tell you the dark side and then of course its just you. You will be like the others that after a year or two you will sing a different tune. But hey what do I know I just drove for them for 2 years.

Relax, I didn't say that you were wrong and I thanked you for the warning. It's just that I have read negitive things about every company mentioned on here and the goods have far outweighed the bads about Roehl. I am not so naive to believe that Roehl (or any other company) is perfect and since I have not yet worked for them I can only base my oppinion of them on what I have heard and read. After doing my homework, which included reading your post, I feel like I am making a good decision going to Roehl. I hope everything is going well for you and your husband and that he had a speedy recovery, again I meant you no harm or disrespect. Sometimes you just have to pick the lesser of the evils.:biggrin_25521:

First of all Gypsy, I hope your husband recovered well and is up and going. Unfortunately, what I am learning is that the whole dispatcher/fleet manager set up is pretty flawed in that, in some cases, it apparently incentivizes them to push people beyond what is generally reasonable. Of course the trend in this country is to push labor as hard as possible since these companies know (not just trucking) that there isn't much you can do given the job market.

In many cases, this industry seems to be a race to the bottom. There are a million companies and o/o's chasing a limited freight pool and many times, the win goes to the cheapest. Not the best, not the highest level of service, the cheapest. The companies have very little pricing power so they cut costs. Biggest and easiest to cut? Labor. This also attracts folks who probably aren't professional or experienced enough to handle their responsibilities well. Sounds like your dispatcher issue with your husband is an example. And since labor (outside of some of the national LTL's) is unorganized and has no voice, there isn't a way to balance the scales.

Long haul trucking's biggest competitor, the railroads, are just the opposite. Over the years they have consolidated down to a handful, the barriers to entry are absolute (try building a new railroad) and labor is highly organized. The companies have pricing power and labor has a strong voice.

Bcso is right in that there isn't a company out there that doesn't have some negativity around them. I'm starting a new career here and I have rapidly learned its flaws and hardships and I'm sure I'll experience more. Crete, Roehl and a few others I have run across appear to be on the upper side of the scale although it's sure that they too will have issues and some of their people will be idiots. Of course I have found that also even when I was in mid and upper management positions.
