I'm trying to get in to the industry (actually my wife and I as a team). I have a felony conviction from 22 years ago. Alot of company sites say that if it has been 5 yrs, 7 yrs, 10 yrs with no issues, that they will still consider an individual, but I've talked to many of those companies direct and make mention of it and they tell me I'm not hireable. I'm certainly not one to hide this BUT do these companies that say that on their websites only do background checks BACK 5 yrs, 7 yrs, 10 yrs?? I was 20 years old and an idiot, my life is completely different now but am I in a situation where this is an industry that I can't get in to?? Any help/info would be appreciated!!

    Thanks!!

Try smaller mom & pop companies.

THIS is a perfect post for young folks about what can happen because of a momentary lapse of reason. Not picking on you, but I think this is worth mentioning. Your past will follow you for your entire life.

Depends on the felony. More and more larger carriers are taking frieght into Canada, and their drivers need to abide by Canadian laws on who can and cannot operate a CMV. With the number of drivers currently available, companies can be real picky, and a driver's ability to operate in Canada may be the deciding factor on who to hire...

@jarhead, you are right, I've used my past as an opportunity to help others, however, it's really biting me at the moment!! The smaller companies are usually not willing to bring a "new grad" on so that creates another obstacle. I also wonder, if we CAN get onboard with a company and put in our 2 years, will the industry experience override the background or will it be the same, basically limiting us to a company with "looser" hiring practices??

    Jarhed1964 Thanks this.

I dont know, but can they trace a felony back that far,as you certainly must be off parole by now,if (having done time) or probation if not.? And IF they cant, why report it?-Although Canada would be a problem,it is for me with 2 30 year old dui"s.:biggrin_25513:

I have some experience with running background checks. Some companies set their parameters at a certain time frame and if there is something on the record further back than their parameters, it doesn't show up. My problem is, I don't want to answer the question NO and then have them pull it and find it.....and I don't know how to find out how far each company goes back.

With this new homeland security the bigger outfits are going back to when you were 18 thats as far as they can legally but most of the smaller companies go back as far as 10 years. If your haveing problems as far as that goes pm me and Ill give you a few companies that are willing to give a driver a chance as long as they are honest. Ive been out here along time and have more than a few contacts to help out.
