The short and simple answer is you need 2 dollars a mile Period.

I almost bought a truck this month but when I called around to see what the companies are paying, I thought I better leave it alone. Most will only pay 1.08-1.24 and some don't even want to pay the FSC. I found out real fast that you can't make any money like that. The truck I was going after was a 2010 western star and the payments were up there.
Next time I'll look for an older truck with far lower payments, then I could make some money, not a lot, but some. -
Beer Runner I think the only way to truly make money on a new truck is to team it with your spouse and even then you still need at least 2.00 a mile and a sure safe contract. We also looked into getting a truck this week but when we did the math of the rates you were quoting we would make 3,000 a month.....

The best way to make money driving is to buy a truck outright. Payments kill you. Payments force you to drive for cheap freight when nothing else seems available. Payments are not the way to being financially sound, IMO.

truckers are a joke! if they missed a gear, truckers are a joke! if they back 3 or 4 times to get the trl straight between the lines, truckers are a joke, if they pass on a double solid,,,,,,(line),

Getting $2.00 or more a mile would be great get rid of the load brokers for a start and that might happen.working for large companies that get fuel at low cut rate prices insteed of paying the market price helps. As a owner operator working for a smaller company and paying almost full cost for fuel my trip to Alberta and back to Ontario I still clear just over $1800 and of couse this will change when I dont have to run the truck to keep warm. They also pay for plates and insurance if I was paying this there would be very little to work with.
