I say get the CDL, try trucking and if you don't like it, you'll still have the CDL if you were to be a lineman for a utility company or something. You can never have too much experience or knowledge. I agree though, you'll probably make more as an electrician.

As far as the OP,well, the electrician would have been a good field being you are already trained.
And as far as local work you may have to go over the road for at least a year to land a good local job.

How do you know you'll like trucking? Rent a U-haul or Penske Truck, the biggest one you can drive with out a cdl. Then drive around for 11 hours. Try to park at Mc D and fight with small cars for blocking the road........then multiply that by 24/7/365.

I'm in the same boat as you Toilet! (No family, kids, financial burdens, or anything) I was in a truck locally for about 3 years though. I went and got a degree and now I miss being in the truck. My dad kind of supports me, my mom not so much! lol I am having a very tough decision trying to figure out what to do. I loved drving a truck and even though it was local and was home every night, I still pushed the 11 hour drive (majority of the time more), 600+ miles a day, and a full 70 in 6 days. We ran hard! Granted I wouldn't sleep in my own bed or shower in my own shower, I think I would love OTR! Enough about me though, i hope you figure out what you want to do! You will def get a lot of info from this site!

I agree with you about the he's driving record, the Tatts aren't a problem but I would wear a long sleeve for orientation/interview. Anyhow, he's young and determine and thats a PLUS, and if all fails, he can go back to being an electrician.:biggrin_2558:

Hey, here is finally a guy that can make money in trucking. Everytimeyouhave a layover at a truck stop, they will surely have a toilet or shower to fix.Plumbers rates right there. They you can fill in as a cook when the regular cooks take their break. Cooks rates there also. Oh, make sure you wash your hands between jobs, even if the regular TS employees don't. YUK
See there young un, your future is bright. Go for it.

Im a 24 year old kid looking to get into OTR trucking. I would love to hear from everyone...Vets, newbies, wifes and family of truckers who have any stories, info, pros and cons of trucking. I have no kids, love to drive, and have been researching this an it seems to fit me pretty good. One more question I have is that I have visable tattoos. Sleeves and hands. Will that hurt me in finding a good job with a good company? Thanks guys and gals.
