What rear setup for dump trailer?

Should be fine, what's your gross weight limit?

 

4.11 gears are just fine.

 

You basically have it figured out. Wheel bearings,axles,drive shafts and ring and pinions are usually bigger. The drive shafts and u-joints are usually bigger too.

 

What about standard 40's (ds404) vs. Super 40's (DSS40P)? searched but haven't come up with much

 

Most truck manufactures use the same rears and suspension componets. Mack has their own but can also be spected with Hendrickson and Meritor ( Rockwell ) rears.

 

I have a different concern than the strength of the 40s. Yes they are weaker than the 46s but as long as you dont get throttle happy if you get stuck they should be fine. My concern is weather you can bridge the weight legally. Im from NY and I think our over weight permits are the same as Mass. ( I could be wrong ). I think a 26 footer is to short for the 107,000 permit. Even with heavy axles and a tri axle trailer I think 97,000 is all you can get. I think you need a 30 footer or longer to get 107,000. Even at 97,000 It will be almost impossable not to be over weight on your drives with 40s. With a 26 foot trailer you cant move the load to the rear of the trailer to get the weight on the trailer axles because it will be full front to rear. I have a 36 foot triaxle and 46k rears. If I load the trailer even front to rear I have about 45k on my drives. I also have a 13,200 front axle an will have 12,800 on that. I have done this with a tractor with 40k rears but I needed to load rear heavy to keep my drives legal. I was close to over on my trailer then. Just because I had three 25k axles on the trailer the permit only allows 58k on them. If you already have the truck with the 40s then I would just go with it but watch you axle weights. The DOT in the north east loves to wright over axle weight tickets.
