I'm surprised there is a discussion on having gl or not. It never dawned on me not to have it. I know it is not a government requirement. But as said here, this is a business first, and what business would not have it.

I have two accounts that require being added to my insurance as a named insured. Because it cuts my protection in half I'm thinking of increasing my coverage. Probably wait till I'm getting more than two loads a month from them. But I think JB wants to be a named insured. Something to think about if you go with them.

And if that is the case, you will want to increase limits. And if you are using there trailer for one of your loads then you will need 2 million to have the minimum coverage most ask for. You could skate on this by why risk it.

I think it has a lot to do with what state you're based in. Maybe TN isn't very lawsuit friendly, I have no idea.

I believe that you are talking about putting them on as additional insured. If so, it only means that they will be notified should you have a lapse in coverage.

for those of you that dont think a seperate general liability policy is needed, you are wrong. some of you have it confused with the coverage needed to have your authority. gl covers anything that might occur beyond the scope of your authority required insurance. for 400 dollars or less per year, it is laughable not to have it.

I contacted Progressive today to ask about $2mil, just for info..
I am at $339/yr now for $1mil and it goes to $465/yr for $2mil.
    Still a good deal.

I asked my agent about costs on GL and this is what he said:

"Anything less than $300/yr for $1mil or so and it's likely the policy is mis-rated. GenLiab for some type of business other than trucking would lower the premium"

Makes sense since you can have GL for any business, like another poster said earlier (for a cleaning service). Who knows ?!

My GL was only $200-ish for 1 million, but that was over 10 years ago too.

The state you are in does have an affect on your insurance rates.

    Oh for sure!!
But my agent has seen many times where another agent will mis-write the policy to save a client money. Claim the biz is cleaning instead of trucking and the rate would indeed be lower.....

All you need is a dishonest agent...that spells disaster. I think there was an agent out East that was taking peoples $ and never sending it into the company and yet printing bogus insurance forms and policies. He's in jail right now!

I'm filling out the JBH paper work this weekend and will get it back to them Monday. Need to read the "Declaration of Hunt" that came along. Its 28 pages long!
