Talked to my recruiter today regarding travel options to the academy in Millington. I asked her if I could drive to Columbus, Oh and park my truck at Swift's terminal, (taking a bus from there to Millington). My reasoning being that due to Greyhound's wacky routing from Wooster, I would have to head North to Akron before heading South. Driving to Columbus will knock almost 3 hours of travel time off the trip to Millington, TN. She stated it would not be a problem to park my truck at the Columbus terminal. I have to return to Columbus anyways, for my 3rd week of school for the Road Training. My plan would be to drive back home to wait on a mentor. I am delaying my decision of whether to take the bus from Wooster or Columbus, because I am not sure about orientation after completing the academy. I am hoping to get into the flatbed division, so I assume I will have orientation in Gary, IN. before(?) going with a mentor. Does Swift provide the bus fare from our home to orientation? By reading this forum the FB division seems to have quite a wait for mentors, so I do not want to be sitting in Columbus or Gary for weeks while waiting for one. Recruiter stated this would be the case, but I prefer to hear from recent academy graduates for your experiences.
Excuse me if this appears to be another one of those "well, duh......" types of questions.

Buckeye....I don't know about parking your ride at Swift...but personally..I wouldn't do it.....I'd be afraid the thing would get buried in snow, or hit by someone or broken into..these things happen ....but I can definitely relate on not wanting to ride the #### bus anymore than you had to

Parking your car in Columbus will be fine. There is plenty of parking. I had to wait five weeks for a mentor and that was for Van. Flatbed I do not know how long you will have to wait as there are less mentors.

I also thought that if you where going to pull flatbed you had to go to Phoenix for training. MIght see if a Swift Flatbedder chimes in.

Have you asked if they'll reimburse you for your fuel if you drive your own vehicle all the way to Millington? They use to.

The Columbus, OH recruiter stated I could park in the personal vehicles location and "the truck would be fine." Being that my truck is banana yellow, I would hope no one will try to "peel it" with their bumper while I am gone. Driving to Columbus is just a nice option since Columbus is only 90 minutes away from home.

    Flatbed orientation locations are:
Phoenix - new recruits from Western states
Gary - new recruits from Midwest states.
Greer - new recruits from Eastern states.

Even though my residency state Ohio (Columbus terminal) is in the Eastern region, I assume Gary, IN would be my training and home terminal. I will send my recruiter an email and find out for sure. I would like to transfer to Columbus eventually, but I am getting way ahead of more important current concerns for now.

Extremely slowly. It seems that when you age you heal slower. *sighs* Aging is just so many varied little insults. And now I'm needed to help my husband recover from his heart surgery. The good news is that Swift is being incredibly kind and generous. They'll allow me to be off until April 25th if need be. The bad news is that we have no salary coming in. lol

Here's to hoping you both heal up right quick. One hopes the fracture is not on the arm that wields that infamous "pointy stick".

to the rest of you: stay safe out there.

Yes, Swift provides transportation to orientation. I even presented them with my taxi receipt from the Greyhound station to the lodging facility and was reimbursed for it.

    Texas-Nana Thanks this.

i was reimbursed for my airfare from san diego to phoenix and back in an amount equal to the cost of the greyhound tickets. in reality, the difference in price wasn't that much.
