Firstly, I know that Toughbooks are great machines. But I have to face the fact that I don't have that kinda cash. I want to place a laptop on a mount and use my GPS software. I've found it far more useful than any standalone GPS for the truck. So what machines have you guys/gals had luck with?

Not any longer. I'm headed for ruin! :biggrin_25524: Do you recommend against that mount for safety issues, or vibration, etc. ? Lots of laptops would be just fine. But wondering what people's experiences are for mounted laptops, or do most people just not do this?

I dont recomend it for all of those reasons, You shouldnt be looking over at a computer while driveing and do who knows what else, GPS can be distracting enough at times when it keeps yelling at you lol

And that mount is going to be in your way all the time, espeically if you have a narrow cab.

Vibrations are really bad for electronics espiecally computers unless you go spend the money for one with a solid state harddrive. You'd be 1000 times better off useing the Rand McNally GPS. It does everything you could ever want and then more.

I use an IBM T23 on the road. Toughest laptop I've ever had. It was still when IBM made their laptops and before Lenovo (sp) bought that part of the line.

The Thinkpad is still pretty decent, but the higher end with the better case is better than the low end. The hard disk drive is shock mounted and encased and mine has seen five years, as well being dropped hard enough to damage the battery.

Business class maachines are tougher, and not that much more money bought online.

That goes for any of them, HP, Dell, Toshiba, and the others. On the other hand, I talked to a fellow in New Jersey who was running dispatch for his other trucks, and he bought a new cheapie every couple of years and had no failures.

From experience, keep it off the bunk or seat when running it, I block mine up on a hardsided case, and with the HP, I run a chill pad.

I have been using DELL Laptops since I started "carrying" years ago, and have never had any MAJOR problems...... and getting a replacement HD took 24 to 36 hours. Once I needed work done, they sent me a shipping box (on Friday) The DHL driver WAITED till I boxed it up. I got my laptop BACK before 10AM on Monday FIXED.
They once came to me and did some work on my last laptop in Laredo I only had to call them ahead of time (as if I was already there).
I generally replace my laptop every three years and cover the new one for EVERYTHING, including accidental dropping for three years.
NOTE: that the MOST EXPENSIVE laptop accessory is the WARRANTY, but it is always well worth it.

Reasons for keeping it off the bunk? Falling or sliding off? I would think it would receive the best anti-vibration on the bunk, albeit braced so it doesn't slide off.
