Worth it? I think being an owner operator is a bit like your choice of owning a Honda or a Harley. I choose the Harley. I know it's going to cost me a bit more and I'll be wrenching on my days off. The old analogy is...."If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand.", is how I pretty much answered any negative responses to my owning a truck in the past.
my first week as an owner operator..ouch!!

I like to think so. -
Exactly. You must define this for yourself Grasshopper. -
im back home, been out a month, as stated in my original post the first 2 weeks were tough due to weather and a breakdown, i hit a blizzard in Oklahoma a couple of weeks ago, parked at a truck stop, got stuck in the snow, made a stupid mistake of applying the trailer brakes while parked, left the truck stop with my rear right brakes frozen on, by the time i realized the problem, i needed 2 trailer tires $420, wont make that mistake again, now the company im leased on with says i have 6 log violations, fueling times not matching times on log, never had any violations before, now have to re=write the electronic logs to match the fueling times, anyway, i have made some good money, am taking a week off, need to talk to Detroit, im averaging 5.5 miles per gallon, driving at 64mph 1400 rpm, seems low to me, also there is a missfire/fart at 1300 rpm's under load, puff of black smoke, my truck is a 2005 freightliner with 520k miles, detroit 60, i installed a 2250kw generator, works great, have tv, heater, microwave and fridge in truck, if i said im enjoying being an o/o i would be lying, its very hard work, and finding good paying loads is not easy, i usually get between 1.40-1.60 per loaded mile but have to search hard to find that amount of money, with the company im leased on with they find me work, i can also find my own work and call for approval, i have found myself 4 loads so far, some of these idiots try to get me to run a load for less than a buck a mile, i tell them to go f--k themselves, i have no respect for people who offer cheap loads or the people who take them, i hope this post will be of some value to anyone considering becoming an o/o, on the upside i am making good money, i am learning, it can be done, just expect to make some mistakes like me, i have allot of respect for the o/o's out there, it seems like a great idea to buy your own truck and become an o/o, and yes you can do well, but its not as easy as i thought it would be starting out, but it is getting better and ill be doing this for a few years....
Rich
I am leased on with Jones motor group, in my opinion they are a great company, i think its a good way to start as an o/o, however i will get my own authority in a few months when i feel i have the experience to do so, im leasing a trailer at $100 a week, while i am off work im going to look at purchasing the trailer, seems a waste of money leasing, the air slide tandems are really good, 1st time having a trailer with that option.SheepDog, Irondog, scottied67 and 2 others Thank this. -
By the way Love the thread!!Irondog Thanks this. -
Wow, You had a wonderful week Actually, LI is not NYC. I have ran NYC,5BR and LI for 17 years. If you were 13' or shorter you could get out to LI and back for $20...a little traffic but what do you expect that many people running around. I ran dump and flat all over that area.

That is what I think it is -
Rich,
Try changing your fuel filter first. If it still farts at 1300,it might be turbo starting to go. Is it a DDEC 3,4,5?
As for the Authority...why wait? If your calling around for loads...that is no different now or later. Just make sure you have all your paperwork in a row, license, registration,MC#,Dot# and Insurance. You can either wait 30+days for settlement on loads or sell the bills for % of the gross. Logs,etc...#### paperwork...you will be a secratery! Get a girlfriend or a wife to do it.
Dude, dont be hard on yourself about the mistakes...THERE IS NOT ONE GUY OUT THERE WHO HAS NOT DONE SOMETHING STUPID OR CARELESS!
So dont beat yourself up...Oh, and buy your own trailer...why pay someone elses payments...If you could manage the financing..go for it.
If your pulling flat...you should be getting a lot more then 1.40-1.60 a mile. Those brokers have a hell of a lot more room to work with. I have a friend that is a freight broker and he makes 500K a year...TO HIM..
Good luck to ya!
Joe -
oneshot Thanks this.
