I kept a cheap beater car, but one year the total number of miles I put on it was less than the dollars the insurance cost for the year!

Thanks for the note about paying a bit for rent. I'm planning on taking the per diem next year, but my home "residence" is my parents' house. Definitely appreciate the heads-up.

It makes no sense to pay rent and utilities for a house or apartment that you're only going to see a few days every month. I live with my parents. Sounds creepy being in your 30s and living with your parents but once I tell people I'm a truck driver and I'm only home a few days every month, it all makes financial sense. I used to have a car. We sold it 2 years ago. Again, it didn't make financial sense to make a car payment and insurance on something I only drive a few days a month. Both of my parents have a car and I'm on their insurance so I can drive one of theirs.

Besides, after driving for a month..the last thing I want to do is come home and drive ANYWHERE. and when I do my first thought is "wow this is really low to the ground."

Man, you ain't kiddin! I have a full size Chevy 3/4 ton with a 4" lift. It feels like a low-rider after a week or two in a rig. And my Mom laughs at me cause I still square the right hand turns....

The car we had when I started driving was really low to the ground. Hubby picked me up at the truck stop for my first home time, and I got in the car and the first thing I said was 'Where the hell is the ground? I can't see the road!'

Just get you a little moped. Hell you can strap it to the catwalk and take it with you! I wouldn't do it to get rich but if you are interested in being a trucker then give it a shot. Sounds like you are giving up a good gig though. Make sure you leave on good terms just in case. As for money if you are a good driver your first year you are probably going to do $400-700 a week. Keep in mind there will be weeks you make nothing and weeks you make a lot. Also weeks you can be in the negative! Most companies pay weekly, very weakly!:biggrin_25523:

Good luck man, welcome to the forum!

Pay isn't important to me, as long as I get a job I'm good.
I'll be listening to Pimsleur or other audio program for learning languages while driving, and I plan on mastering as many languages as I can, and when I do that, I will get a much better paying job in the future and I can also show off my language skills, which it'll be awesome, but in Chinese restaurant I just don't have time to learn language, but driving a truck I can, I can listen to audio language learning program while driving and when I finish for the day I can just get in the back of the truck where the bed is and learn languages on my laptop
I speak English, Mandarin, Fuzhounese, Cantonese, and Spanish, and I'm going to learn Arabic and Russian as my priority and as many languages as I can

Why has some company not picked you up already? Or the military as a language specialist? I think Joe and I are going to learn a language on the road, just have to pick one. He speaks English and German. I speak English and Spanish with a smattering of French and Italian. I'd love to learn an oriental language.

Sounds like you have a great life plan going.

Well, I probably have to master a language all the way in order to be a language specialist, I just wanna be able to communicate in a foreign language so I can talk with a foreigner so I can show off my skill and it makes me feel good about it, and I would apply for other jobs and most job application asks you how many languages do you speak so I can select the ones that I know proficiently, but not necessarily fluent, and I think it looks good on the job application, but to get a job specializing in language such as a translator, it's more difficult.

Lol, I was driving home after parking the truck and I also thought "How do you see the traffic lights from way down here?"
