For all the newbies out there, everytime you do something, it gets easier and if you make a mistake...LEARN FROM IT and dont repeat it -
Ill be heading to Little Rock from Detroit on Saturday. Ill be joining the specialized glass Devision. I had to catch a flight as they gave me quick notice and I have my last shift with Detroit Fire Department friday into Saturday 0800-0800hrs. I have been following all of the different threads on here pertaining to Maverick and you guys made my choice very easy. I am a little worried about the physical test as I am a bigger guy, but i passed the Firefighter physicals just fine so im hoping I do not psych myself out. Any last minute advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

If you are a firefighter then I have no doubt you will be fine with the physical stuff.
Just do what they say and be on your best behavior. Remember what you can and make your mistakes (and you will make them). Ask for help when you need it and do your best.
If you need anything just let us know..
Good luck! -

Greetings All!
I picked up on Sunday at Mittal in Columbus. Got two coils loaded eyes to the side and was taking them to my favorite...not....place...Precision strip for a 1500 delivery on Monday. Had the usual waiting while the outbound deliveries and Precision strip trucks cut in front. Finally got unloaded and figured I would be going over to Southland Tube.
Nope...Got a pick up at Georgia Pacific in Durand Georgia. Had never been there before. The ride down AL 77 (i think) was spectacular...until it got dark. Then it was not much fun at all.
When I came to the first sign that said GP, I partially turned in and called the security office. I told her where I was and she was having a hard time telling me where to come to. She kept saying, I should be able to see you. It was pitch black and no lights on the sign at all. She finally said just come up a bit and you will see us on the right. I get up there and ask here if it is possible to park for the night. She says no.
I think great as I am out of hours by the time I will be finished.
Got a load of plywood and had fun with the tarp machine. I asked the guy in shipping about parking. He said just park on the other side of the scales...drivers do it all the time. So I park my truck and walk up to turn in my paper work and tell the lady in security what the loader had said. This is the same lady that told me know.
She says "yea you can park back there on the side"! I was dumb founded and wanted to say something but thought the better of it.
This load is going to Maiden NC.
When I wake up in the morning the truck is surrounded by about a dozen log haulers waiting to get into the scale. I thought this will be fun getting out. But they cleared out before I left so all was good!
The road that Mccrary frame is on is Mays Chapel road. The directions say look for the Domino's pizza on the left and then turn on the road.
The dominos is closed and I could see no sign. The road sign said Mays Chap...but from where I was it looked like Chip...so I drove past. Had to go up to there other plant to turn around.
As I was going up their road, all of the other signs for the little side roads had it all spelled out...but not the main road...go figure.
The guy at the receiver undid all of my straps while I was doing other things, helped me pull the tarps off and helped me fold both of them....Nice guy!
I requested info on a pre load macro 31 and got one with 3 stops on it. Just after I finished writing down the routing, I get a cancellation and then get a load to pick up in Moncure 176 miles away. I was going to be late before I started so I called my fleet manager. I have met other drivers who have been late there and have sat for hours waiting to get in so I was concerned. He spoke with the csr and was told that as long as I am not more than 30 minutes late, I should be ok.
Was able to get in ok with no problem.
When I got there there was another Maverick guy there. We spoke and I introduced myself. He said your from the forum right! I said yes I am Jim The Hut! He said I am Ruger Dave and this is my first solo load. When I deliver it you will get $500.
He said he told them that the reason he choose Maverick is because of Me.
Sure enough I got $500 this week for referral.
It sure was nice of him to think of me and also of Maverick to do it!
I spent the night down the Road a the little truck stop and had one of their fresh sausage and egg biscuit the next morning! They are delicious!!!
The load was going to Huntingburg In to Masterbrand cabinets. It was a 640 mile run and I made it. They have a second shift so I was able to get unloaded that evening before the rain came in.
From there I went to Logan Aluminum. My pick up was for 0600 t0 1200.
I finally got called at Midnight and was loaded by 0200. A 14 hr wait. It poured down rain the whole time with a few stops in between.
The two skidded aluminum coils were huge and used up most of my lumber tarps.
This wait screwed me up for getting a restart this weekend as I got home today and have to leave tomorrow morning.
I headed out at 0330 as I was not able to get back to sleep. It was going to Crown Cork and Seal in Bradley Il. It had had snowed up that way but they had it cleared up by the time I passed through.
I got right in and the guy tells me I was going to have to wait 15 minutes until the unloader got back from break. I just laughed and told him about my 14 hr wait.
Got unloaded and got a load right away to Mittal Steel going to spartanburg SC.
I did this same run not to long ago.
The last time I loaded it was a 3 hr wait to get loaded. This time I went to a different set of doors and got right in.
I got two shotgun coils and was back at the scale in less than two hours and at the pilot parked in another 15 minutes.
I headed out at 3 this morning and was feeling the effect of the long day the day before. When I got into Ohio on US 30, I stopped at the closed weigh station and started a pot of coffee with my 12 volt maker. It takes 45 minutes and I knew the sound it makes when it is finished would wake me up. So I got a nice nap, a fresh pot of coffee and was on my way!
Got home at about 1030 local time. I will be heading out tomorrow at 0800 and have only 9.75 hours to work tomorrow...so I will not be able to make it all the way to the pilot at exit 5 in South Carolina.
Hope you all have a great week! -
Well Jim it sounds like you had an interesting week.
I am actually trying to remember what I did this week. Oh yeah.. Delivered in Suffolk Va from Ghent from the previous week..Then Moncure to Tiffin OH...Cleveland OH to Jackson MS...Louisville MS then to Lebanon VA(just 20 miles from home) for Monday.
Got 3100 miles 2 weeks ago, 2900 last week and 2800 this week.
Blew a tire on that Tiffin OH load. Usually they don't catch me off guard but this one about made me pee my pants. It shook the whole truck. Front inside trailer tire went out and took out the mudflap. Put in the call and they had me going in a couple of hours.
My load for Monday takes me right by the driving school were it all started so I thought I might swing in there and do a little recruiting.
Be careful out there..

I almost did that a week ago, drive into Roadmaster in Columbus...but I went home instead! Have a great week!
