Map reading, making Q-comm entries, eating a big mac, talking on your cell, all while driving, that's trucking. Your top bunk has a safety belt, right ?

I agree with most of your replies. You should suck it up and learn everything you can from your mentor while you have a chance and then you can go out on your own and be the trucker that YOU want to be.

you know, like i said, I've gone through a lot of training to get where i am. I've heard allot of "professional drivers" complain about how unfair the trucking industry is to them. gentlemen... you are the trucking industry. united you stand or divided, you will fall. stop crying about it and change it. as far as the safety thing goes... i guess i don't posses the magical powers that some of you do. i find it amazing that NASA has not contacted you for further study. "muti tasking" is a fictional term dudes. it's physically impossible. and that's a scientific fact. the ditches are full of "multi taskers" there are two types of people in the world. one that does the right thing cause it's the right thing... and one that does the right thing cause some one's watching. i may be new to trucking but certainly not to living. maybe it's my age but honestly... i remember the first time i sat in the driver's seat of a rig. my first thought was "wow, I'm driving the biggest vehicle on the road!" my very next thought was "wow...I'm driving the biggest vehicle on the road!" a very sobering thought, to me. one that i don't take lightly. and I'd like to think that all you guys out there are thinking the same thing. you seasoned drivers, in my opinion, have a duty to teach us beginners the right way to do things because the life you save may be yours or even worse... some one you love. I've been driving motorcycles, cars, straight trucks and dumps for 30 years with no accidents so i do know a little about driving and what it takes to do it safely. why do you suppose that it's the seasoned pros that have the biggest wrecks? your supposed to become better drivers, not worse.

well first off... they do make hands free devices for cells now... unless you still use a brick. the newer sats can't be used wile driving...only listed to using the dash remote buttons and no, there isn't a seat belt in the top bunk of my truck. why would there be... after all it's illegal to be in there while the truck is moving... and lastly... dude, McDonald's? i don't hate myself that much...lol

here's what i think of those giant maps... my trainer refused to let me use my pc to plan the first trip. leaving Dolton IL he used his "map" and dragged us through god's green earth to get out of there. i figured it cost us about an hour. after we stopped for a break i grabbed the pc and looked it up on streets and trips. the exit that made way more sense was on the opposite page of his map... he didn't see it. i found it in a few seconds. all truck safe routs. would have saved, like i said, about an hour. neither one of us had been in that area before. i don't believe that you should blindly follow a gps but i do think your an idiot if you don't use every tool you have. i already know how i'm going to navigate when i'm on my own. I'm going to plan the rout on streets and trips... check the smaller roads with the big map and once i'm happy with the rout i'll send it to my garmen on the window. takes about five minutes and no giant map on the steering wheel and i don't have to keep looking at it every half hour cause i forgot. you can teach old dogs new tricks. yes absolutely keep your giant maps for reference if needed but technology can make your life way easier. why not use it.

    well since you asked.....

IMO you should probably do as your told while your in HIS truck whether you agree with his methods or not or you can ask for another trainer..

When your out on your own do it your own way..

Here is something else to keep in mind your nothing more than a number in the system just like the rest of us a number that can be replaced at any time get used to it..

Respect him because its his truck but ask questions and tell him you want to be able to do all of this on your own.
Do your pre-trips etc on your own,and when you get your own truck then you can use your own tools .

He doesnt do pretrips? A lot of truck stops have adult mags. Get gay mag of naked dudes. Rip out the centerfold (throw the rest away!) and tape it to the rear of the trailer at shift change. A magic marker saying gay pride on top is a nice touch. After about a gazillion disgruntled lady's call the cops on him and he gets pulled over and has to try to explain why he has a large poster of a naked dude on the rear of his truck to the cops. After that guaranteed he will at least do a walk around before driving.

Dont know what you are pulling but if it has sliding tandoms, here is what you do.
When you get a really heavy load and its to the pin pushing 34k on drives or trailer randoms, when he is sleeping just before he wakes up slide it a couple notches one way or the other, just remember where they were set before you tweaked it so you can put it back again for your shift.

Relieve your self in his reefer tank if thats what he pulls, that will ruffle his feathers.
Slightly unscrewing the priming pump on the reefer will give him a few issues as well. Lots of things, be creative and smart so you dont get caught.

Dont be a snitch! Much better ways to deal with people like that!

Ride with me for a week and you'll think this guy wrote the safety book. :biggrin_2559: If I stopped every time I had to take a call, book a load, order a permit, schedule pickups and confirm deliveries I might as well stay home. I was talking on 2 cell phones yesterday at the same time. One call was taking a load and the other was working out permit issues. Multi-tasking is all based on your ability, some guys here can't look out their window without crossing into another lane while others can do their taxes without issue.

If he's he's all over the road while reading the map or using the phone you might have a problem. But if everything is under control don't worry about it.

i wouldn't be telling a guy to go buy a gay mag.....he'd be looked at kinda funny when he does, maybe even be "asked out"...

not a bad idea, (buying the mag), but maybe ask a female to buy it, and explain why, so she don't look at him funny either..???

another good idea, but the guy will feel the movement...

what does the o/p do if he ain't tall enough to simply "lop it in" the filler neck...?

i got "even" with a company driver by buying the worst smelling perfume one could get....

then i poured it down the heater/defroster ducts.....

nearly drove the guy insane with that horrible smell.....as i laughed my arse off......and the dispatcher as well....he saw me do it, and he never did anything about it.....
