All he's gotta do is adjust the "Forward Power" in such a way as to make it LOOK like it is "swangin'" ever how many watts he wants it to. Gullible people desparately WANT to SEE "BIG WATTS", so the crooked shops oblige them! :biggrin_2557::biggrin_25511:

I'm using a Wilson Flex4. I'd like to buy a Wilson 5000. The prices I found online are too good to pass up compaired to the "truck stop" prices. I know I don't NEED it, I just WANT it.

I have the antenna mounted behind the cab, and, it doesn't clear the top of the trailer, so I'm sure talking with anyone behind me limits my transmit/recieve distance...

You pull a dump wagon, right? I can tell you from personal experience that just about any fiberglass antenna is going to work better for you in that situation than the 5000. I put one on like that when I was pulling a dump, and it basically had no transmit to the rear at all. I could talk to guys coming towards me for several miles, and then not be able to talk to them after getting less than half a mile from them. I also tried a SW-2000, which has a longer shaft and has the coil up higher to try to solve this problem, and it really didn't make it any better. Top-loaded fiberglass is the only way to go in this situation, IMO.

If you want an upgrade from that 4' Wilson, you might try a Skipshooter. I've been running a pair of the 5' since the first of the year, and I've been really, really pleased with them. They seem to get out well, and have elephant ears on receive. Haven't had any bad off-rad encounters with them yet to see how they hold up to getting whacked, but they look pretty stout.

The dump trailer gig is in the future. I'm a "company driver" for now pulling reefer trailers for ShopRite.

Sounds like something I would say lol

Here's my very first CB purchasing experience. I had my CDLs for 2 days ,and was tired of my little Midland not doing anything near what I wanted. I ended up in a shop that was really a doublewide trailer at the bottom of a hill off I-80 I believe. I cant remember now if it was near the last, or first exit in PA, either way. I wanted the biggest bang for the buck of course, so he sold me a used Cobra 29 that came out of a KW, he "threw in" a super tune, and showed me it was pushing 40 watts, and I was so new I asked him "is that good?"..a month later, I had it in another shop for whatever reason, and was told for another $20 he would peek , and tune it for me.
I laughed, and said i didn't think you could push these more than 40 watts. He said that's true, but mine is stock. Needless to say I haven't been back to that doublewide.

I did end up tuning that 29 up, and still didn't get 40 watts. I have a new 29 now-a-days, and run a Wilson 2000 on it, and it works well.

That's probably even more reason to go with a top-loaded antenna then.

I bought the Wilson Flex4 because it was:

    1. $19.99
    2. A Wilson
    3. Tunable

I always knew I'd buy something bigger in the future...

Nothing wrong with it-and in your situation, a 2000 or 5000 would probably be a downgrade.

    A downgrade?

So as the title says, It IS possible to have too much antenna?

I always thought it was better to have (too much) instead of (not enough.)

Bottom line then, a "bigger" antenna would hurt my CB's "performance?"
