I tell every driver we hire that I am not afraid of the DOT. I know what they want and it is easy to keep them happy. The rules are relatively clear and easy to follow. What scares the hell out of me are lawyers!!! There are no rules when a lawyer gets involved in a lowsuit against a truck driver. The bottom line is that even if you are involved in what may have been a non-preventable accident, you can lose a lawsuit if your logs are not legal. All they have to prove is that you fudged on your logs once and they are then able to make the leap to the conclusion that if you had not cheated on your logs, you would not have "been there" at the time of the accident. Therefore, you are at fault.
Drivers that think they can falsify logs and get away with it are living in a "Smokey and the Bandit" dream world and will not work for our company for long. There are more and more companies that are starting, but I truly wish every company out there would enforce the rules. -
And teach the drivers how to split break! OMG they need to learn! Do you know how many loads could have been delivered without Relay, late or driver turns them down if they WOULD HAVE KNOWN how to split break. Yeah my biggest frustration there and drivers logging illegal! But their choice is their choice, I don't want the handcuffs on me -
