    Hello Everyone,

I am currently researching career options in trucking. I have no experience and I am looking to get some training. I am mobile. I am headed to BC in a few weeks but I can relocate if need be. I want to know what is the best route to go as far as getting training?

All I have seen so far has been private companies and they want a lot of cash with no job guarantee at the end of it. People have mentioned that community colleges have programs but I have not seen any on the net. I can dig up some cash to get the training but I need a little more from a school than "your on your own" after shelling out some big bucks.

    Please advise?

If you are going to B.C. in the next little while and are unemployed while there, see if unemployment will pay for your training and then if they will look up Valley Transport Training and see if you could register for their course.Best training school in the west!

Is it possible to get a Canadian company to agree to hire you on condition that you complete the necessary training, so that you have a job to look forward to????

If you train with the noted company, they may have placement at the end of your successfully completing their course. That would be a benefit to you,and also Valley has such a good reputation that you shouldn't have a tough time finding a job after getting your licence.

I hate to tell ya dan2020, but there is no such thing as a guaranteed job after school within Canada. The US offers stuff like that, but not Canada. However, the smartest thing to do, is talk to the schools, and see where most of their students end up driving. Then, contact those companies to see if one would be willing to hire you from the school, and if so, also check them out to make sure it's a place you would like to actually work at. Then, you'll have a potential list of companies to work at, and what schools they're willing to hire you from.

This is the deal though. I can't enter the US at this time. It's possible that I could down the line, but not right now. I think I talked to Valley and they seemed apprehensive about my ability to land a job. I went through the legal system down in the states and things may or may not clear up. I'm fine in Canada and I have a good work history and I hold a bachelor degree as well. My driving history is fine. I have no problem passing a background check in Canada.

So what do you think now?

I really appreciate your insight and do you know of any community colleges offering training? I wouldn't think that such a thing exists at a community college.

    Thank you very much.

Look up colleges' in B.C, and then check the program guide to see if they offer the course.

Also ask each company you contact who and where do they get their students from.I know here in Ontario, some if not most companies worth their salt take students from certain schools only and won't touch the licence mills.I know Valley isn't a licence mill and is well respected.Another highly respected school in B.C is Mountain, see what they say also.

Hey thanks for all the input. I checked my notes and Valley is the school that I was talking to. They did sound very honest and the guy there seemed like he genuinely wanted to help me out. The guy at Valley told me that they send their good students to driving companies, but that if you weren't good you were essentially on your own. The cost for 80 hours was $9800.00 and that was what was called the career package. Tomorrow morning I am going to call up a few companies and see what my options are. I really want to get back to work. It sucks being unemployed!!!!

Yeah I'll check out a few colleges but so far all I've seen over the net had nothing on truck driving. I had never heard of truck driving school being offered out of community colleges.
    Thanks again.

Dan, call Valley out of Chilliwack and see what they say, they are straight shooters. This is the first time I have ever heard of Valley saying they will help you find a job and I would be suspicious of it as it is not their policy to help find jobs, only to provide good training. There are almost zero jobs with REPUTABLE companies for anyone with less than 1-2 years experience in the southern half of BC right now. Most of the guys that get hired right out of school know someone in a company and have an "in". Many companies out here in South Western BC that have training programs and will accept new drivers, like Challenger, have shut their training programs down for the time being. Lots of unemployed here at the moment too, I would line something up out here before getting on the plane.
