I'm sure it has been discussed here a number of times, but thought I might as well make my own thread on the topic. What has been the best/worst truck stop scams you've seen or been asked to partake?
I am traveling south out of Atlanta terminal this morning, and come upon a Pilot on I-75 exit 146. I park way in the back, and proceed to walk to the building. Some guy asks, "...hey Swift...". And i look over, and see a guy walking toward me. Fairly well dressed. But he asks, "How would you like to make a few extra bucks?" He goes on to tell me, his truck blew a tire just across the road. He had a service call truck there fixing it, but was short $43 on the bill. Said that if i could help him out with the $43...that he would give me $100 out of a comcheck he had (that was written out for $400, with an "approval number") when he got back over here for fuel and could cash it. I bull crapped him for a few minutes and told him i'd have to go check to see how much was on my ATM...since i dont carry any cash on me. He told me he had a red peterbilt bull hauler. when i asked, "why dont you limp it over here?" he said he had super singles.
I got a sandwich at the Arby's, and looked out the front, and do you think i saw a red peterbilt bull hauler with a blown out super single on the side of the road? LOL...heck no. And when i came out, he was nowhere to be found.
What i SHOULD have done, was take the comcheck, or atleast ask if i could take it inside and call the 1-800 number and verify it was registered first.....
but what other scams have you heard about, or other methods of trying to raise a buck....other than the lot lizard story and drivers trying to sell rip off movies and illegal substances....
Truck stop scams....

I'm not even driving yet but will remember this tip when I am! Thank you
Not a truck stop but ... Some guys hit me up for three card monty when I was in my RV at a rest area off I-75 in Georgia several years back saying a driver had just won the lottery and wanted to share with everybody at the rest area by giving everybody a $100.00 bill!
I walked over by the truck where there were three guys and sure enough, one handed me a 100! After some small talk I was invited to "double my money" and politely declined. I thanked him and started walking away and needless to say they were not happy, one even blocking my way saying I "need to at least play my free money." I declined again and one guy got in my face intimidating me! At that point I started acting crazy and told them I would rip the face off all three of them if one touched me. They backed off and I walked away with my 100. That was a great day!Last edited: Mar 14, 2011

That would have been my flag, why didn't he just cash it while he was there instead of asking you for $$$?...I don't think your truck has to be on the premises to cash a check..LOL
I haven't seen a scam or even a lot lizard yet ;-(

I often try to get another trucker to find something on a truck that's running close
to us that he would like to see on his truck and ask how much he'd pay for it, then tell him let's follow that truck to the truck stop and I'll get it off the truck while the drivers inside and sell it to him. -
I've ran into a few beggars and lot lizards, but nothing like someone trying to set up a scam. I just tell them I don't carry cash.

How about the flat screen in a sealed box trick? Try and open the box! They get really mad that you would question their integrity.
Wiseguywireless and outerspacehillbilly Thank this. -
Had one a minute ago tell me he wants a begger or wanting a ride but that he was a army airbourne and had a woman "take him" for his wallet and was just trying to sell his stuff to pay for gas back to the base. So I asked what ya got.. he's like ummmmm my ring? (Some cheap ring) lol.. was like sorry bro don't carry cash... he was normal old clothes and unkempt lol.. if he was in the airbourne I'm a dang Navy Seal! Lol

Guy once tried to sell me a case, not a carton, a case of cigs for 43 bucks. Had to pay up front and only he could go see the man, but he was a driver too so I didn't have to worry...LOL. I did not part company with my $43.

I've heard of a similar scam to this Comcheck thing, but this is the first time I've heard of a Comcheck being used as a tool. Usually, it's a fake lottery ticket.
Should message the mods to see if this thread can be moved to the general forum rather than hide it here. It would do more good where everyone is more likely to see it.I_HATE_MINIVANS Thanks this. -
Had a driver once tell me he had a couple extra home theater systems left over from a delivery and he would sell one to me real cheap.
I just told him I had no use for one since I basically live in the truck and have no TV in here.
That's what I said out loud. But I was thinking "Stolen!!!"
