I'm looking for anyone to share their opinion regarding a situation that happened at my place of employment. I feel that this forum is a good place to pose my question.

A fellow employee from our shipping office was accused, by a trucker, of demanding and taking a bribe in return for loading his truck after business hours. The trucker had arrived one hour and five minutes late (6:05pm) to his appointment--we technically close the shipping office at 5pm, but the accused is accustomed to staying late at the office for late arrivals. The accused had two of our forklift drivers load the truck--a total of four pallets of product were loaded--not exactly a large load.

The accused has been employed by the company for over 10 years and has a clean record. No one believes that the accused would have demanded and/or taken a bribe. Our corporate office has called for the suspension (without pay) of the accused pending the outcome of the investigation.

My question is, what could possibly be the trucker's motivation for making a false accusation of bribery against our employee?

I welcome any speculation that anyone may have. I feel any information would be food for thought for me as I proceed in assisting with the investigation of this incident.

    Thanks.

Not a good reason to make that claim just makes sure there would be no late loading in the future kinda stoopid if you ask me

So you're going to proceed with assisting in the "investigation" based on speculation? You're obviously biased in the "investigation" to begin with by assuming that the driver is making a false accusation.

Sounds believable to me. You'd be surprised what people do when they think they can get away with it. And if it's a grocery warehouse I can definitely believe it.

Has the employee in question taken a polygraph? Has he filed suit against the driver for libel? If it were me that’s the first two things I would do no matter what your company does.

I don't drive yet and don't have a real clue here but can think of a few reasons like maybe the driver asked his own company to reimburse him for the alleged charge to get some free money?

Scum exists everywhere so if it's the driver or your employee I hope they pay with their job. Too many decent people out there that would love to have either.

Maybe because your employee DID INDEED demand a gratuity from that driver to load him out after hours...lots of people on death row that have no prior record, you know...

Good point, it’s a rare day when watching the news we don’t see the neighbor being interviewed saying “why he was the nicest person in the world and would never hurt a fly” while they are hauling the guy away for some heinous crime against humanity!

Thats for sure. I was a Loss Prevention Representative for a large grocery chain store for a few years and conducted investigations that resulted in the arrest of multiple employees for theft and fraud. The most memorable was the night Receiver who was taking LCD t.v's and other electronics out the back door for a total of approximately $40.000.
I used to hear that all the time, so and so would NEVER steal cigarettes from the display, so and so would NEVER make false returns and void transactions on their debit card. But unfortunately for them a few well placed hidden cameras proved that these people WOULD in fact commit these acts when they thought no one was looking..

Maybe the accused made a joke & the driver took it the wrong way. As a warehouse manager for 12 yrs I've unloaded a lot of late trucks. My guys & I would joke with the driver that it would cost them. If the driver asked how much, we would say a case of beer. We always unloaded the truck. Never held them to it. Never saw a single case either.

Somebody made a mountain out of a mole hill. But seriously, there are possible serious legal actions in the future. These type of accusations can find their way into a court room. It is one thing to "joke" about what it might cost and if a driver wants to "tip" whoever, that is his business.

I was delivering to a place in Florida and had a 10 PM appointment. I arrived # 1 PM with my a/c on the blink. I walked up to the supervisor and told him of the situation and I told him that if he could possibly get me in, I would "take care of him" because there was no way that I could sleep in the truck. He got me right in and unloaded, I "tipped" him and was on my way home.
