I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on this but I don't care, this just how I see it. Truck driving schools are like slot machines for trucking company's. Those company's make a lot of money by predatory lending (financing) and desperate people who just want to earn a descent living.
I'm wanabe and I've trying to become a trucker for about 2 years now trying to do it on my own, and it just can't be done. The local trucking school (truck drivers institute) around me wants 5,000 up front to train me and 7,500 # 18% if I finance it. A person should not have to go into debt if they want to work and earn living. People shouldn't have to forced to work for a company an entire year to pay for the high costs of school. Maybe if the school wasn't so expensive people wouldn't have to make such a big commitment.
I understand people need to make their own way in this country, but, you can't exploit people by make people pay for their right to work. Its a constitutional right to work (the right to pursuit of happiness).
I know where the real problem is. Insurance company's don't want to cover the liability for a new driver and so company's can't take a chance on people. However, you can't blame insurance company's because most trucking company's insure themselves.
Maybe the government needs to bring back some of the older regulations and limit the amount of CDL's a company can have to change the industry for the better and safer roads. Then company executives say there is a big demand for new drivers don't have enough drivers. If company's really want drivers, then they start paying to train them, instead of demanding everyone have experience instead of taking a chance on someone.
I'm going to keep trying to find a better way of getting started, but until then I'm not going to be another Jackpot and give in to their system.

Well, first off, it's not a constitutional right to work. That's a whole other topic for the political section though.
The regulations are such that learning things on your own isn't going to be easy. The insurance companies aren't going to touch you even as a company driver without that certificate from a school. Most trucking companies require school too. You are being put in control of an 80,000 pound machine worth more than $100,000 along with cargo that can be worth millions.
Good luck in your efforts to learn it all on your own, but it's going to be hard to find a job that way too.DontTreadOnMe, Admin and l2rr2l Thank this. -
MacDonalds will pay you to train....American-Trucker Thanks this. -
Really?
"A person should not have to go into debt if they want to work and earn living"
Maybe I should demand my money back for all that college tuition I paid for myself and my two sons. And their automotive technical schools.
I know some lawyers, doctors, and other professionals who have over $300,000 in student loan debt.
That said, there are several companies like Swift and CRE that will train you without you having to pay huge costs upfront.
Other than that, pull your head from the sand and realize that you're going to have to pay some kind of cost to get started, either upfront cash or a contract to work for a period of time.American-Trucker and Ranger70 Thank this. -
If you do more research you should be able to find a cheaper school. Some community colleges offer classes, bear in mind you will just have enough knowledge to get that CDLA from the DMV;the real training starts when you go out OTR w/ the trucking companies trainer, but then you will be getting paid a little something for your time.My twins got their CDLS from Smith Solomon, for $2,800.Whatever you do it's best to have your class A,then get on w/ a co.Those trucking co's that train you for your CDL then hire you, own you until you pay them back.Only go that route if you can't do it any other way, cause they will ruin your credit if you don't pay them back.

I knew a lot of you would disagree with me, and thats ok. Its just a waste of my time reply to everyone and try to argue everyone one of you.
So I'll just reply to those offering solutions, and what works and what doesn't.
The problem is how do I get in the trucking industry without declaring bankruptcy, or enslaving myself to a company for a year? -
Yes your right CR ENGLAND offers school for 2,000. So I saved my 2,000 and now they won't hire me.
-
I got into trucking by going through a school that I financed the tuition for and didn't go bankrupt. My hubby did the same thing. He's got a couple years under his belt, is with a smaller company, and is making decent money.
You want to be an accountant/CPA/doctor, you finance the schooling, put your time in to earn your position, and then the good money starts coming in. You can't start at the top.
I think it should be easier to get your CDL like it use to be, back in the good old days, but it's not. Thank government regulations for that nonsense. -
Not trying to hack on you, but there's a lot more to the story here, because they'll hire most anyone. Lay it all out on the table and perhaps someone here can give you some guidance. Coming in here with a crazy attitude and anger on your mind, while having employment eligibility issues..
wicked Thanks this. -
That's the way it is these days....People don't want to accept any responsibility for themselves.
This guy doesn't want to have to pay or sign a contract to work for a year to get his license and want's to blame the system for his own issues (whatever they may be) because if CR England won't hire you...There's a problem, They will usually hire anything with a pulse!
Good luck getting a job without putting anything into it.American-Trucker Thanks this.
