I was wondering how much past health history has on getting your cdl license.

I've been hospitalized twice in the past and am on a couple of medications. I plan to get my medications switched to ones I can drive on.

But does past hospitalizations mean anything? One was for a mental issue and the other was marijuana related. (I haven't smoked sense and don't plan too) First being almost 3 years ago the second almost 2 years.

As long as no doctor has reported you to the DMV, you should be OK. Just don't mention it to DMV. BUT my friend, be honest with yourself, and us. Are you really OK to drive ? Off the meds and cleared from the mental issues ? Truck driving is serious business, stay away from the drivers seat if you have any concerns.

I'm 110% sure. I've had numerous people tell me how huge the improvement has been over the years.

These were bumps on my life that I regret but they are things I have learned from. They changed my future and I accept that. I have a tattoo on my right arm to explain it all.

'How we survive is what makes us who we are'

I know I'll have to stay being on some medications but through my searching of the forum they don't seem a huge deal. And I'm pretty sure the ones I'm on now are DOT-approved anyway. Least according to the list they have.

I do plan on going over this with a recruiter. But I just wanted to be able to get an honest answer here in case he BS's me.

But as for myself. I have zero concerns in my ability to perform my job. I'm just nervous my past might stop me from getting there.

ok first and foremost, what your friends or relatives say isn't as important as what MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL says about you...!!

as defined in the FMCSR book, "one is qualified to drive if not found to be listed under (9) of part 391.41 "Physical qualifications, and examination's"

which says, has no mental , nervous, organic, or functional disease or psychiatric disorder likely to interfere with his/her ability to drive a commercial motor vehicle safely.

now too, on any DOT long form physical, one of the "check boxes" you or the clinic worker must check is yes or no to a question which reads in part, "nervous, or psychiatric disorders, e.g. severe depression, if yes, list medications.

ok now.....try and keep this secret.....have a problem, or an accident.....think they will NOT find out if you lied..??

ever hear of "fired on the spot"..??

ever hear of "civil lawsuits" if you caused a wreck, or even involved in a wreck...??

lawyers are gung ho to hang us drivers...

    wanna chance this...??

just because "people around you" say you look good, are better now, does not wash what a DOCTOR says about you...

frankly, anyone that was ever in a mental hospital...?? should never drive a commercial motor vehicle.....

no one knows when anyone will "snap"......let alone one that has already been in a mental hospital....the stress of the job...i just don't see the need for a former mental patient to be driving 80,000 lbs on the highways....

I actually deleted this from my post to shorten it up.

But in a nutshell. I've had a psychiatrist, a licensed social worker, and my main doctor all say my improvement is amazing.

Mine does not. Contrary to popular belief, depression doesn't affect your driving ability at all. The only thing that could possibly affect it at all is the medicine you take.

Medicine affects everyone differently. Thats why people are closely monitored when they switch medicines. A medicine that might put the general public to sleep might make one person hyper as hell.

I do not plan to lie at all. Hence why I made this thread.

Not all 'mental' illness cause people to go all googly and hear voices. Over 15 million people suffer from depression and go about their lives fine. Many of these include doctors, police officers, paramedics (I was in a paramedic class at school with 4 people who had bi polar/depression), lawyers, dot officers, and so on. Heck, even animals suffer from it. Not to mention A LOT of your fellow drivers.

While I believe that people with a real bad case should definitely reconsider a truck driving career. I know that I can do it and do it safety.

Now as for myself. Driving has always been the best thing in my life. I love to go out and cruise and look at the sights and watch the vehicles go by me. I enjoy being by myself and most of all, I enjoy making money.

I believe trucking is a perfect fit and I know I will do it safetly. And I will gladly go out there and prove you wrong. So when that day comes and I meet you at a t/s, I can smile, wave, and say 'told ya so'. :biggrin_255:

I don't condone lying, especially in such a serious venture, but if you don't plan to lie, you won't be driving.

"depression doesn't affect your driving ability at all"

Really? Do you think folks are in a great mood right before they end it all by running into a concrete post? Or do you think full blown depression leaves you with 100% ability to focus on such a radical job? I disagree wholeheartedly.

I see where you're coming from. Those people would be suffering from Major Depression which is the super serious one. I'm Minor Depression. While the difference in major and minor sounds stupid, their is a HUGE difference.

I can also guarantee you those people were not taking there meds, did not have meds, or were not up to date with a psychologist/counselor.

Most people who make a move towards suicide never had help of any kind before.

I'm not preaching to you. I'm stating my point.

You said it yourself and mine does not interfere at all.

As for the doctor part. My doctor signed off on me to get a gun. I think thats proof enough.

I appreciate the input you guys are giving me regardless.

I was not in a 'mental hospital'. I was in a ward for eval and let go. Mental Hospital are only for extreme cases usually people who could cause serious harm to themselves or others.

Please do not make assumptions on me, I do not appreciate it.

I've had the gun for over a year now, I hunt with my family. It has never caused a problem and is currently in my closet in a case.
