Hello to all,
I've been in this business for 11 plus years..the last 5 as O/O. Prior military (USN ret. '86)..Currently leased to a very small company..no QC, just cell and laptop. I love the independence of this job (lifestyle) and looking forward to our great nations' economy steadily improving for us all.thinkingabout trucking Thanks this. -

Well I lost my job last month after 16 years with a company make orthotics and prostheses, trying to figure out what to do for a living. Looked at a game warden but Michigan just laid off 4000 police, firefighter and so on, so that did not sound good. Thought about home inspections to many people are doing that in this area. The only job that sounds like I will always get employment would be truck driving. But there is only a few things I don't like about it is that my wife works 3 shift as a store manager and we have 2 young boys. As I read this forum and see most people say they are away from their families for weeks at a time and that would not be cool with the wife and kids. Trust me I can be away from them for weeks at a time they can't be away from me for that long. lol. So I am still looking at schools US Truck Driving School sounds the best right now, but still looking and thinking about it. As they say if Mommas not happy nobody is happy.

Not all jobs take you away from the family. I am not blessed with one as of yet, but I did luck out with a great job, you just have to think outside the box a little. I work for a paving company hauling material from the quarries back to the yard. Also do a little big of float work and run machines when the need arises. It's seasonal work, which means you can do something else in the winter like plowing or whatever hits your fancy. Home every night (sometimes late, but still home), and the pay is pretty good. Plus the construction industry doesn't really feel the effects of a recession quite as hard as other sectors, and it's the quickest to get going again because the government always "builds" out of a recession. I hope you get everything sorted out, these are rough times for all.

Welcome Thinking...Similar circumstances. Had a career in real estate, then real estate tanked, I held my own but it was continuously more difficult and less gratifying. Wife got laid off, and with the economy what it is...trucking seemed like a fast way to get up to speed in a new career and replace wife's income and bennies.
So far, so good. Started training in late august and on the road in November at full income and benefits. Enjoying the life. Miss the family but I stay out long enough to get decent home time to make it more beneficial than a quick weekend of doing laundry and re-stocking groceries.

I will be happy to answer any questions.
Good luck.thinkingabout trucking Thanks this.
