I have started an intiative for airbags and stronger safety regulations in trucks to be written into the Highway Bill for 2011; is anyone with me?

What I really wanna hear is what good will it do for the truck driver? A car is like a tin can to a truck, unless you're going head-on against a wall or another semi trailer, the initial impact might not kill you but the 40+k of cargo will make a sandwich out of you. Either way air-bags or not, it's not a happy ending for the truck driver.:biggrin_25513:

Im not sure they're necessary, I mean, can you really get hurt in an extended hood semi? Besides going head on with another semi or train of course...

Obviously you have not seen many truck wrecks. Driver's die everyday from wrecks somewhere in this country. From my experience the rollover claims a number of drivers, especially unbelted ones. Striking an fixed object like a overpass structure is another one. Extended hood semi's look like an accordion after some of the wrecks I see.

Trucks aren't designed to save the life of a driver.......

DB is right....You run the ribbon long enough...See all the "fatals"...You might just become a little more cautious and run legal......

Believe me, there are circumstances when an airbag would save a trucker's life; even for verteran drivers.

it not only stupid, it is as you said, completely stupid! I like your style! You do not have any grey area in your thinking. Yeah I should capitalize the beginning of a sentence.

I already have 6 airbags on my truck if you don't count the driver....

Why don't you put your energy into writing a highway bill for stricter & more comprehensive training of new driver's. Make sure you write in there that a trainer must have a mininum of at least 5 years continuous driving. The trainer must be in the passenger seat monitoring the trainee 100% of the time during OTR training. And that these 3 week cdl mills must be a mininum of 8 weeks.

i really dont think an air bag would be a great idea---yes in some circumstances they would save an injury--(or cause one)
but like diesel bear said--being tossed is a major problem for those who dont wear seat belts (stupid idea)
but in so many of the wrecks you see--there is no truck left --more so with the aero trucks--everything from bumper to the drivers seat is back in the sleeper

and if it is in a pete or any long hood--hell the bag would go right over the drivers head anyways
