Ok, new to the forms, new to trucking, fresh out of trucking school.
So i was wondering.
I have a $18 an hour job lined up.
10 hours a day no matter how short of a day I have.
average is 6-7 hours a day.
5 days a week lined up.
Running from Just over the bridge (Commodore Barry) NewJersey to Brooklyn NYC.
Or should I go with one of these OTR companies that takes newbies like, TA, FFE, Knights, Smiths, you get the picture and have to worry about not getting enough miles, have downtime, get a bad dispatcher or DM or one of the other many stories I have been hearing on this site that have been scaring the hell out of me?
Little about my self.
I have a great wife of 18 years.
I have 2 wonderful daughters 10 and 16 years of age.
42 years old.
Don't know if I can handle being away from my family for weeks at a time.
I think I am kind of caught up with having a big shiny KW sleeper and driving across country and being called a TRUCKER!!!
Over driving a day cab and seeing the same old thing every day.
I want to get the experience of a OTR trucker but scared to find out if I got the stuff.
Any comments would be welcome bad or good. Just leave out the calling me a sissy, my wife says that enough to me. hehe![]()

You have an $18 an hour job lined up? Take the local gig and enjoy being at home with your family! A trucker is a trucker, no matter what they drive. Your oldest daughter is close to graduation and your youngest is near that wonderful teenage time. You have the chance to be home and not miss things, take it!
Panhandle flash, EZ Money, U4EA and 2 others Thank this. -
100% the hourly job ! You cannot replace the missed games and events and you will regret it. Put your road dreams on hold and finish raising the kids then you and mama can do it together. Stevens, McCurdy, J.B., and the rest will still be there when you're ready.
Lilbit, Jay1000x and Panhandle flash Thank this. -
10 hours guaranteed and only work 6 or 7? I wish I could find a job like that, and they will pay overtime 2 hours a day whether you work or not?
There probably is more to it but with the information provided, it's too good to be true.Jay1000x Thanks this. -
Its all true, I have a female friend that already does it, I have went with her on her runs.
Yes when she runs over 10 hours due to traffic or her load being delayed witch is very rare she says.
She is compensated.
I happen to get my CDL training at the right time. They are getting busy and they need another driver. She said I am in once I take my test.
April 12. got out of school before test date.
waiting impatiently.

$18/hr is a pretty good amount.. in a place like Raleigh, where the cost of living isn't so high. But, if it gets you what you need, I'd definitely go for the local job, as well.
Jay1000x Thanks this. -
Now don't get me wrong--I really do like what I do--and I have run local--many many many many moons ago!
But in today's day and age--it ain't what it used to be believe me--now I am also a grandfather etc.--and IMHO--this is a NO BRAINER--take the gig and enjoy life--if you really feel the need to go truckin--while you are runnin local--keep your eyes open--I'm bettin you run into more than one O/O or small company operation that runs regionally etc--that could use a spare guy on the weekend etc--and then once in a while you can get in an OTR truck a run a night out--sleep in the truck--eat the crummy food out here etc. LOL'then go back to your day job
It isn't really that bad out here--but that is a decent gig--with a decent check
Just my$.02
