With all this talk about truckers gaining weight driving and
shortened life spans I was wondering what you more seasoned truckers
can tell the new drivers what you're doing to keep weight off
    and healthy.

We're thinking of a cooler for my husband, fruits, veggies, he likes yogurt,
trail mixes I can make up a head of time. Nuts, veggie and baked chips
and good old sandwich meat and cheese.

With time constraints is it unreasonable for one to take a 20 min walk
at a rest stop or truck stop once a day? Maybe once am and once pm?
Would time constraints be an issue or is it more a self control /determination issue?

IMHO--it can be more of a determination issue--as hard as I try to stay fit--there are some day's you just don't want to LOL--but YOU CAN always find time--Personally--I always park as far away as possible and walk--also-any drop I have that consists of more than just a few minutes--I use that opportunity to also take a walk and/or do some stretching exercises--really isn't hard--BUT you do have to get in the habit of it--
Of course there are going to be other constraints to that--like safety--some places you might not want to stray too far--and weather can be another factor--but all in all it can be done
As for carrying food--I have done it for years--course it started out more of a money/slash decent food thing--and now just as much a health issue--I carry fruits and veggies for snacks--apples/strawberries bannas are my main choices--also usually have a bag of those small carrots and use those as a snack going down the road instead of the things I used to eat--The other thing he/yu can do-is get used to drinking water instead of all the other type drinks--this made a big difference for me! With me it was habit--was raised by a coffe drinking truck driver--for years--I ALWAYS--had a cup as I drove--and for refreshment it was only sweet tea--NOW after my 2d cup of Coffee at start of day--I have another travelmug--filled with ice water and sip that going down the road
As for meals--I do have a fridge and a microwave--and my favorite flavor is BBQ--LOL--when I am home(and I know it is more than most)I will grill a dozen of so skinless Chicken Breasts--and two o three-95+%Fat free Pork Loins--just pull them off grill 3-4 minutes early--then finish cooking in nuke in truck and still have pretty decent flavor--But a least 2x a week--I do find somewhere decent to eat and sit down and relax and have a good hot meal--just try to be careful what i choose--if for no other reason--I get tired of eating in truck
    Hope this helps a little........

After you are out there for awhile, you will come up with ways to suit yourself. Remember, if you have 10 hrs off, you have to sleep, eat, shower, do paperwork, call home, amuse yourself, whatever. Team drivers can't do all these things obviously.

A 30 minute walk at a brisk pace would be better, two 30 minute walks would be twice as good. Cheese is better than some things but has a lot of fat. I imagine your husband is older and high fat diets are a leading cause of prostate cancer. Avoid bologna, salami etc. They are high in sodium and fat. Coldwater canned fish (good for Omegas which helps with chlorestrol levels which is good for the heart) would be a better substitute. How about a nice tomatoe or cucumber whole wheat bread sandwich. A bowl of high fibre, low fat and suger cereal for breakfast. Time constraints should not enter into the equation. There is no job out there worth killing yourself over to save someone else 10 minutes.

You can do squats, dips using the steps, pushups etc. for muscle tone. Equally important are stretching exercises. Sitting all day in one spot is hard on the muscles. You can get a book on stretching for under $20.

The hardest part of doing it is doing it. Once you feel the positive benefits of doing this it becomes easier.

Well, to answer your question, I run 5-6 miles (almost 1hr of running) 3 times a week. I also bring a pull-up bar and use it for pull-ups $ push-ups. I have actually lost weight since I started driving 5 months ago. I went from 175lbs to 165lbs. I guess it's from eating light while on the road. Save your money by avoiding fast food as much as you can. I confess, every now and then I give in. As long as you don't make it a habit, you should be OK. A great place to shop and stock up on goods is Aldis'. Very affordable prices and you can buy a lot more for less. You'll have enough goods to last you a week. So basically it boils down to this...eat light, exercise to your ability and gradually improve, and that should be it. When you can look in the mirror and like what you see, you'll be proud of yourself. Good luck.

I walk extra lap around my truck every time I check the tires. get up and down the steps to enter the cab couple extra times. cat walk steps work just as good. use the dot bar to stretch when loading or unloading. (door steps work just as good)
I keep a snack & drinks cooler. fruit, dried fruit, veggies, those crisp chips made out of almonds, true north I think, I just love those. I am totally addicted to pepsi, but for every bottle of pepsi, I drink one bottle of water, juice, or gaterade/koolade type. other wise I drink way to much soda pop.
I pre-cook, freeze, and package some things in single serve sizes. like pot roast, chicken ala king, italian pork, ceaser chicken...almost any casserole or skillet meal type things works pretty well so far.
I also keep flour tortillas, use instead of bread for sandwiches, doesnt matter if it gets squished. imo easier to eat a salad in a tortilla wrap, and no dishes, whoohoo.
I know isnt much, and should do more, but is better than nothing.
