Getting ready to buy & want to ask for some good advice, I have read many about older trucks pre emissions but good ones are a needle in a hay stack. So today's market most are 05 or newer, I am wanting to buy something no more than 40K & but looking for the most bang for my buck. Looking for the most MPG, dependable & if it has to be repaired parts that can be found at a decent price & not hard to come by. Not looking for something flashy like a Pete, just want to find something that is going to make some money & that I can enjoy without spending my time hanging out in a shop spending money on, when I should be out there on the road. So more or less if you know or if you had to start all over again which would you chose? I will be pulling a van trailer & will be running West, South & Midwest states. I'd like to find the light loads, but may be hauling loads up to 45,000 at times. Thanks for your help in advance.

I would be looking at Ptb 386 and KW T600 i think thats right for the KW. I just believe Paccar has the best cabs and overall are wrench friendly. Not sure when Paccar and Detroit parted company, but i think Detroit's got a good product. I'm a Cummins guy(ISX),but would suggest trying to buy something without an EGR valve. I wouldn't buy anything without a dyno test and if at all possible some warrenty. And i mean official Detroit or Cummins Warrenty. Good Luck!

Well based on what you are saying you are likely looking at a Century or Columbia. Seem to be the best value for the money when you are talking under $40k. And get one with a Detroit.

Not in agreement on extending factory warranties. They are expensive and the mechanics that I talked to when buying my truck last year said that they are hard to get claims paid on them.

From what I have been seeing, prices for used trucks in firming up. They seemed to be in a free fall for some time. But as the market is getting better you have more mid-sized companies buying in bulk off-lease. This has been discussed in a some of the threads here.

My preference is to stay away from the national used guys. Starting prices are high and not sure how much they will come down. I never got that far with them. Seems that from word go they started pushing an expensive warranty. Guess I know how they make their money.

If your financing, you'll have a hard time older than 07'. First time buyer, you'll need plenty down. You may want to look at financing first, it may force you to a certain brand/year truck. good luck

Just make sure the truck has the right specs for what you are doing. Also you have to at least be able to stand driving it. A truck that looks cool, may be just that lol. believe me I know. I just sold my 1987 kw with a cat and 5x4 trans, looked cool just not too practical with the way fuel is, I'm sure you will make a good choice. select trucks might be good to check with... good luck...

Very unhappy with my 07 Columbia I bought from Select Trucks. No matter where or what you buy I'd get a dyno and if possible a mechanic to check the truck over. I got the dyno but not the mechanic and I have paid the price with numerous little things that have gone wrong. Factory warranty is good but understand it's only going to cover major failures and the little stuff adds up quick. For quality, I'd go Pete or KW for sure and agree with the previous post on the 386 or t600 KW. EGR valve = problems in my experience.

Thanks guys & the more input I get the better, I was kinda thinking about a International 9400 or 9900 with a Cummins, I was told a min of 500 Horsepower & 13 speed. I did drive Freightliners as a company driver with Detroit, like I said not really wanting to look cool with a Long Nose Pete going down the road, but in this to make $$$ with wanting to put most of it in my pocket. I ask you because this is how I have always learned in life ask questions & ask someone who has got burnt before. I did call one dealer the other day about a truck & he had no history as what has been done to the truck I was asking about & said they bought it at a auction & then he had another salesmen go out & check a couple of things I had ask him about instead of checking himself, that told me he was not wanting to be blamed for something if it were untrue. He was a new truck dealer BTW, I wasn't about to drive 300 miles & walk away, been there before & don't know why people do that & waste others time & money. I sold many things online & was always honest to the buyer & knew about what I was selling & NEVER lied to anyone. Keep the suggestion's coming as I do enjoy reading all of them & the more information I get the better, as I want to make the best decision when buying a truck. I am not worried about financing as I have excellent credit & plan on paying cash maybe & this really isn't the information I'm wanting to know about.

Buy what you can afford and what will do the job you plan on doing. FRLR Century , Columbia , Int 92-9400's are good starter trucks.

Going to be quite a few fleets upgrading ( sales orders increasing for new ) and that will have the filter down affect on the used trucks being made available.

Try www.truckpaper.com There is a really nice lookin '07 T600 KW that has a salvage title on it due to theft. Truck was missing for a year and a half and has only 70K origional miles on it. Best part is it was stolen for the engine so they put in a '03 ISX (PRE EMISSION). they are askin $49900 which I think is a hell of a bargain as long as the engine dyno is good and oil analysis is good....be worth checking into.
