Number one, you have to be on time. The customer then has 2 hours to deal with you, after that detention kicks in based on 1/4 hour increments I believe. Not sure of the rate either, I've had it vary from customer to customer. You must also make note of the times on the BOL before you scan it.

is that for flatbed as well?

Michelinman, I only drove flat bed for about 6 months so I may be talking out of my arse here but I never waited for any one to unload me. Usually they are waiting on you to un-tarp, un-strap, or un-chain. Many times as soon as I had my securement off the load the fork lift was right there to grab their stuff. The only time I ever waited to unload was when pulling into a busy place with lots of trucks to unload but I can't say I've ever waited over an hour.
Now, getting loaded that is a completely different story, you will wait and wait and wait for other trucks to get loaded and out of the way. -
Like Tiger said, they wait on you most of the time. Layover pay as well, I've had to ask for it once in 3 months so far.
-
It happened to me twice in the past week where I had to sit all day waiting to get loaded. So, I've lost 2 full days when I could have been driving.
Just found out flatbedders don't get detention pay. I don't mind it once in a while, but it's ridiculous to not get paid for a day's work on a regular basis.
Is it common to sit and wait around all day or did I just get a streak of bad luck? -
My question is why are you sitting? Lots of trucks there to get loaded? Shipper getting load together? Fork lift driver is a lazy a55?
Your best bet is to get unloaded and over to the shipper as early as possible to be first in line. Lots of places that flat bedders load out of are first come first served when it comes to loading.
Just remember to get your load and throw a chain or strap over it and get the h3ll out of the way of the next guys. -
yes, lots of other trucks in line.

Get there first and you will be in the front of that line
