I know guys who swear only by the Francis, and I'm not denying that for the MONEY they are awesome. Maybe one day I might give the dual Francis set up a try. It just makes sense to me that a coil loaded antenna with a very flexible whip is the way to go. Do you also prefer them over the highly sought after Monkeymade, Browning's?

BTW here's what I ended up getting instead of upgrading my 29. This thing really did fall in my lap, I found it in an old truck we bought for parts, and I had it tested and it works fine.

A radio should only have to be tuned once, unless you had a hack do it for you, I also believe that all radios should have it done free of charge if you buy it from a reputable dealer, especially an authorized dealer, to make sure the radio is up to spec. Now for me Talk back is a waist money unless of course you just like to here yourself talk, the only time I could see it being useful is if you like echo (so you can set it) and I won't have that junk (echo) on any radio I own. I do know most techs push talk back since it's an EZ 30 bucks or so in their pocket for 5 min's worth of work and a buck or two in parts. -

As for sparky "peaking and tuning" for free, let's just say some things don't deserve to be paid for and leave it at that.
Just my opinion of course.
I will admit to making the mistake of thinking I could make echo sound really good when properly adjusted and wish I wouldn't have wasted my money on adding that. Live and learn I guess. I just leave it off now.(altho just a little doesn't sound that bad but not worth paying for)
I AM glad I spent the extra $ on the RK56 modded for BT tho(cobra mics leave alot to be desired tho the stock BT one isn't half bad) and the only other thing I plan to do is the receive mod(another cobra weakness is not so good receive) WA4GCH turned me on to and I'll be happy with my 29. I'll do that myself tho so it won't be costing me anything but a few bucks for the transistors and diodes and I'll have a 29 that receives better than most and is a whole lot quieter(noise wise) to boot, gets out pretty good with the RFX75, and sounds pretty #### good according to those I talk to on it.
I'd like to have someone else get on it while I listen on another radio one of these days to see just how good it does sound.Last edited: Apr 14, 2011

Well Al has never done me wrong and I've bought a few radios from him, he's even headed me off from buying a few dogs of radios. I'm just in the next state over and I get my stuff 2 business days after I order it. There is on thing I wish he would change and that's his not taking tech calls over the phone, he only deals with emails (he always answers my emails in an hour or two) so I have conformed, I can see his point about being stuck on the phone but I still like to talk with someone who is knowledgeable on the phone before I lay down my hard earned cash. -
I'm still waiting (been over 2 weeks now) for admin approval to join Sparky's forums and this is AFTER an email from Al saying "I see you joined why haven't you posted?"
I replied and told him why(waiting for your admin approval) only to have my account disappear altogether! lol By that time I had already spent over $700 on a couple radios, a meter, the modded RK56, 3 BT ext. mics, and some other misc. stuff.
From the tech standpoint all I admittedly have is hearsay that he's a snip it and clip it sort of tech.
Perhaps I've been a bit harsh on Sparkys here lately, but from a customer service standpoint this sort of thing is bad and I'm not the only one here that has had the exact same experience.
Maybe it's the people he has moderating the forums that aren't dependable and if that's the case then he should do away with the whole admin approval thing. Better to let a few spammers thru than turn away good paying customers.
Again, just my opinion.Last edited: Apr 14, 2011
