Those shorts aren't a fashion statement or an insult directed at your delicate sensibilities. They're part apparel, part equipment, same as football shorts. They keep us from getting big open sores from the saddle. Wearing regular shorts over them defeats that.
There's special padding in the seat of those shorts.
Want to see photos of saddle sores? The hurt, take it from someone who resisted the shorts for years, because of how they look.
If I wanted to look cool, I'd drive an 18-wheeler.

Amen all around! I've gone thousands of miles on bikes and hundreds of thousands at the wheels of motor vehicles. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that most people don't want to pay that much attention or consideration their fellow travelers. Anything that pulls their attention out of their personal errand is resented.
Sadly, that's the population where all the drivers and cyclists come from. 99% idiots and jerks.
The only consistent exceptions seem to be truckers, cops, and motorcyclists (okay, older motorcyclists).Big Don Thanks this. -
I pulled this rig 2000 miles last year, on a journey. Only reinforced my respect for the truckers, and for anybody who can control a vehicle hauling a loaded trailer.
Exception: Western Alabama log truckers. Least professional drivers I've ever seen.
Anyway, to anyone I may have encountered out there, thanks for observing my big orange rear-facing SMV triangle. -
For some reason I'm trying to imagine seeing an 18 wheeled Bike.

Now that dayre is funny. I was thinkn' the same thing...

There are all kinds of regular looking shorts now that either have the chamois padding and/or spandex liner. Lots of them sold as "downhiller" shorts. That's what I wear.
-
Everybody's the fashion police when it comes to bikers in spandex. I don't hear them talking about the tight pants on pro football and baseball players. It's functional athletic apparel worn by folks who aren't telling anybody else how to dress.
-
i have used those shorts before, they are fine for downhilling because you don't pedal that much. if you do a 60 mile epic on your mountain bike, you will have a sweaty mess down there.
-
I'm not a downhiller, but I've ridden my mountain bike plenty of miles with them and I don't find them to be a problem at all.
-
i find they aren't as bad when riding a mountain bike, but i used them once riding my road bike (CAAD9) and it wasn't pretty in there. i think i push it much harder when riding the road bike and that's prolly why.
