Reprogramming the ECM. On your computer if they put out a BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) upgrade you need to "flash" your BIOS to make the change. It's just a cute little term for a simple programming update/upgrade process.

What is does is it changes the parameters that the engine runs. Most will add timing and fuel maps at all levels.

The benefits are more HP, a smoother running truck, and a major gain in MPG.

For me, I could gain as much as 1mpg, which will give me about $400 each week in my pocket!

Oh yeah! One mpg gain/loss is huuuuuge! So is there a downside to reprogramming the ECM?

And if its so beneficial, why isnt this done by the manufacturer?

I was wondering this as well. What are the options/trade-offs you need to consider when doing this. I found a company doing tunes on D12's. And while it is pricey I have talked to and read guys getting 15-20% MPG increase and increasing HP at he same time. But not hearing many people talking about the negatives.

i will try to keep this simple. the manufactur took a good engine and made it retarded to get it to pass the new emission laws. by flashing it you are changing it back to how it used to be and turning it up. you get more power and better MPG because it is not a r-e-t-a-r-d any more lol

The only downside to it is if the truck is still under warranty, then it will void it as you have removed the emissions files.

The reason why they don't do it is so the engine will pass the govt's emissions laws. For example, my engine is a MBN CAT (bridge) engine.

Cat produced this engine because the the ACERT was not ready yet, but the 2004 Emissions reg's had already gone into effect. So CAT choked it down, and made it barely run so it would get less of a fine. CAT paid a fine for every engine it made in 2003/2004 to the EPA, and the fine was based on the amount of emissions it created. So they killed the motor to have to pay less of a fine. By having the truck re0tuned to a 6NZ (pre-emissions) file, it will gain MPG. Mr. Haney also tunes it to run better at all fuel PSI levels instead of the "blanket" fuel maps that CAT used.

It will not harm your motor and will actually help it to last a little longer if you don't go overboard with the tune.

I too have heard the guys running the D12 motor are not happy with the MPG on the later model trucks. I also spoke with a guy Sunday night in Hudson, WI that had his motor tuned by some company in Sacramento and he has gained about .4mpg and he said the truck runs great and is very smooth. He also said he see's less carbon on his oil smaples and less soot out the stack?
