Interesting,
Cell phones and running motors (gas or diesel motor) is bad around fuel tankers but smoking in one cursing down the road is a non issue lol
Anyhow, I'm probably the only driver at my company hauling diesel that doesn't smoke while driving and yes, reloading. I had two different trainers and they both smoked cursing down the hwy. When they was finished, they would throw the butt in the floor board and stump it out as they continued on their way down the road.

Smoking while going down the road smoking in a enclosed cab, with (any if at all) fumes blowing behind you, IS not a big issue. As long as you use your ashtray. No smoking or matches/ lighters allowed on the property while loading, we had to leave all that stuff at the gate office at Esso/Exon/Shell . Again IF it was a major concern, believe me ESSO/Exon/Shell would be taking names of who was smoking & you would NOT be loading there any more. And Shell is so safety orientated that if you get a speeding ticket at 5mph over you get booted off of any more shell loads for life. I quit smoking 15 years ago.Last edited: Jun 2, 2011

I was hauling extremely flamable paint once. Had a tire that needed replaced, so I stopped at that t/s in Ringgold, GA. Idiot burned the tire onto the rim. Right behind and under the trailer doors. I pointed out the placards on the trailer. His response?
"I hauled ordinance in Nam (guy about my age) and I know what I'm doing!"
Okie-dokie, then. You go on ahead with it, then. I'll wait over =======================================>here. -
Smoking in the truck with flammable placards on the trailer is roughly the equivalent of smoking in your car with the gas tank behind you - non issue like others have said.
Against the rules but that's about it..trucker_101 Thanks this. -
Around here we had a fuel driver that got pulled over while smoking in his cab. Placarded Flammable 3 <1203>. Gasoline of course. Driver fined $25,000 and company fined $25,000. You learn not to get caught after that.

Just think how much money you've save and how many years you've extended your life.
