Can anyone give examples to explain the differences between detention and layover pay? I've seen some company websites offer layover, some offer detention, and some offer both. However, all of them never give an explanation as to the differences.
Thanks!

Layover is time waiting for dispatch between loads.
Detention is time spent at shipper or receiver beyond a set amount (1-2 hours) where the driver is paid for wait time.bentstrider83 Thanks this. -
Is this the generally accepted definition for each of those terms used by the majority of companies? Or, can there be some variations?
-
Tazz is correct, and here is an example of each:
Your company has you deliver on Friday, and your next load picks up on Monday. The downtime is layover.
Your delivery appointment is Friday at 6:00 a.m. They don't finish unloading your truck until 4 p.m. That downtime is detention.
This is the accepted definition of most companies-- whether they pay layover or detention is a different story. -
Thanks! Appreciate the quick responses.

One other tidbit of info here, almost always, you the driver has to request it from dispatch. They won't just give it to you automatically. Document your times for detention, arrival, bump the dock, etc.

Many companies "offer" layover and detention. Very, very few will actually pay without the driver raising enough hell to possibly jeopardize his/her job.
-
So, would you note this detention/layover in your log or do you have to call and raise hell to get it?
-
I use to detention time as on-duty, not driving. Hours got ate up, never got paid detention time. Finally gave up and ate the detention time to save hours. In my experience, lay-over pay exists in the same imaginary realm with unicorns and honest politicians.
