Question for the big fleet drivers.

    How many of the big fleets have a curfew for how late at night you can drive?

    I usually try to run til about 4 am or so and it seems that about 9 pm central or so, most of the big fleets aren't on the road.

    Do you have to shut down at a certain time?

    There's a huge shortage of truck parking. Most will start their day earlier and earlier so they can get a prime spot at the truck stops. After 5pm or so, parking becomes a challenge as the lots are full. Curfew? Now that would be nice since I had no choice but to drive all night. Very few times did I get to shut down before 10pm.

    How the **** do these guys CHOOSE to shut down at a certain time? I mean seriously, do they not have schedules to keep? Are they given 3 days to complete a 1200 mile run or something??

    They just start their day earlier. Like 3-5 am, get up and go deliver. The majority can do that. Depends on who you work for and what you're hauling. There's alot of businesses out there that have bankers hours. Meat haulers, loads didn't come out until after 10 pm most of the time. So we didn't have that luxury.

    And when they start their day I have a parking spot. I rarely have trouble finding a spot at 2 or 3 in the morning at a truck stop.

    I haul pretty much nothing BUT meat. We're one of Tyson's little lap-dog companies. A typical Tyson load ain't ready til the LAST MINUTE when you can still make it if you drive non-stop all day and put your fueling, meals, everything on your 10 hour break. 10 hrs in sleeper, 15 minutes for pre-trip/fuel and down the road you go. Run into traffic and you're up **** creek. And we're always out on these 2-lane roads full of old people and slow-moving minivans and hopper trucks just loafing along not giving a **** who they're holding up. Can't get a long enough verifiable gap in oncoming traffic to get around them unless you've got a space shuttle booster rocket attached to the top of the trailer.

    I would always use my planning to work for me so I would be down by 1700 or so. Sometimes it wasn't possible, so I would drive at night like I do now. I prefer daylight, I'm one of the "solar powered" types. Besides, I like to see what I need to miss.:biggrin_25525:

    The other things I wondered about was if foglights were hardwired to the ignition switch and if the company issued them no-finger driving gloves...but didn't want to push my luck.

    One thing I do notice is parking spots opening up after 4am or so, but in the area that I run parking really isn't an issue.
