What brands have you used that actually lasted a long time in the truck? A lot of these mini fridges last a while in a house but they hardly last long in a truck. He had a plug in cooler but it didn't keep things cool enough. His old black and decker mini fridge didn't keep things cool enough either. His magic chef just died on him. It kept things cold but died last night. He's scrambling to find something that will work.
Another mini fridge question

Another one to look at is HAIER. I bought one yesterday to replace my Igloo 12v Cooler (wanted a bigger space). I purchased it from Best Buy and its supposed to be a good one. I will give you all a review when I start using it in the truck, I am on home-time right now so its running in the house.
The HAIER also has a freezer inside despite the fact its very small.
This is the one I have: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Haier+-...218325256025&skuId=2392107&st=haier&cp=1&lp=8 -
I just bought the two door from walmart, fridge and seperate freezer doors. I spoke with another may driver and he takes one frozen gatorade bottle and puts it in his fridge at night, I dunno but its my plan, and getting a small 700 watt microwave too!

Ref: the 12v coolers. I know you asked for a good brand, but these tips could save you some cash.
Most of the time they quit cooling (ie: weaker cooling), it's due to dust built up on the cooling fins (kinda looks like a tiny radiator, or the heat sink in your computer). Take a can of air and blow them off once every couple of months.
If it stops blowing air out of the vents, check 1st to see if it's getting power. The constant vibrations on the truck wears out the 12v plug (a problem with all my 12v devices). Check the inline fuse (if so equipped). Also, the fan is easy and cheap to replace. You can get them at most computer stores.
These little steps and I'm still using the two (drink and food) that I bought 3 years ago.BigJohn54 Thanks this. -

Has anyone used any of the mini fridges from the truck stops? Not the coolers but the actual mini fridges. The ones that are normally between $200-$500. My bf still hasn't replaced his fridge yet and he's not really gonna have any time to shop around for one so he's looking to get one from a truck stop.

The mini fridges that you can buy that will replace the one that came with the truck are the best as they are actual refrigerators and freezers!Offer to pay the installation charges and your company might let you have it in the truck but I would think about leaving it in the truck if you quit or have all the cabinet parts ready to put back in. Zariadea He can also get them a t a dealer but they will bend him over with the cost! The ones you are talking about are the same things as an OEM fridge.
The "cooler" types you can buy off the shelf at WalMart and truck stops are "OK" but you need to remember that they cool down to a certain point from the ambient temperature of the truck.
Put it simply if it's 80 in the cab and the unit cools down to say 30*-40* degrees below ambient then it's barely keeping anything cool!
There are a few tricks you can do to help them along such as aiming an A/C vent on the cooler to lower the ambient temp. Keep it off that floor as the floor of most trucks has jack crapola for insulation! Yeah the carpet and rubber pads have that thin stuff but nothing of substance unless the truck was spec'ed with insulation (yep that's an option when you go to a dealer and spec out a truck! But we all know that there's not a single company that would even think of ordering anything that could make the driver more comfortable!) Put your hand on the floor while driving along any road where it's maybe 80+* out side. Pretty warm isn't it? It's because heat from the engine and off the pavement and the OAT are all working on the metal of the truck and radiating in. Get the thing off the floor.
You also have to realize that those things were not made for constant use as the smaller built in types are. They also weren't made to handle all the bouncing and movement and rough handling they take in a truck.
You can use ice or even dry ice to help them to stay cool but buying ice pretty much kills any "savings" you were trying for!
Most Freightliners have that spot under the table for those bigger and better built coolers! Petes I've owned or driven the refrigerator was above the closet. Yes they cost more but when you look at what they do over a "cooler" the price is right! They can freeze and stay at that 38* or whatever temp it's set at. Yes they use more electricity but when used in conjunction with an APU or allowed to idle truck it's a moot point.
Buy cheap and you get what you paid for.BigJohn54 Thanks this. -
My opinion is that would be a huge waste of money.
