I worked for a company for 6 mo. Until my wife contacted them with a family emergency. Company regulations provide for an immediate leave in any emergency. My mother inlaw was dying and the company refused to allow me to go home insisting i take a load with me. I pleaded with them and told them i refused to drive and they threatened to terminate me unless i hauled a load. I had to wait two days for that load and all that time knowing time was running out. This well known company (one of the
largest in the country) thought more of money than safety, employee or family as well as company regulations. While under duress i made a uturn on a 4 lane road in an area that provided a uturn lane. NOT A HIGHWAY OR INTERSTATE but an out of town 4 lane street. On my way home and 2 hours from seeing my mother inlaw she passed away and i was not there for my wife. I spent the next week in mourning and funeral preperation. The day after laying her to rest. The company called me with my termination and insited i drive the truck back to the terminal. I refused. My refusal resulted in the following:
According to my DAC report.
(1) Abandoning my load. (I left the truck and load locked and protected at
a location 55 miles from the company terminal).
(2) Illegal use of a company vehicle (because i made a uturn).
The company told me i was responsible for a $3,000 training fee.
One of the most extensive safety training programs of any company.
I refused to pay them for their training program as they terminated me after breech of their very own company regulations.
As they insited i haul a load while under duress i should not be held responsible for making the uturn which was "NOT ILLEGAL" but improper at most.
I told the company to take me to court if they wanted my money yet 3 years later they have not because they know they were in the wrong, so they did the next best thing and have effectively ruined my name and reputation as a safe and reliable driver costing me hundreds of thousands of dollars and 25 years of driving time taking away from me any chance of a good retirement. At 46 years old i am beyond trying to start a new carreer and have a $10,000 schooling bill i cannot pay. What is left for me? In a country of unemployment skyrocketing. A bullet behind the ear?
Schneider National is supposed to have the highest safety program in the country. Don't believe it! They are not! They are all about the money and we the drivers are only to be used and manipulated to one end only. The money![]()

For a company with 11,000 plus drivers, that is very good. -
I'm calling shenanigans.
1) My dad died early Saturday morning. I called in, arranged to relay my load at the Atlanta yard and flew home. My load would have taken me home but wouldn't have gotten me there until midday Sunday (short on hours). At no point did anyone even suggest that I stay under the load. SNI will give you leave but they are under no obligation to pay for your travel. If you wanted to take the truck home you should expect to haul a load.
2) It is SNI policy (which you agreed to) that u-turns are not allowed. You are responsible for everything that happens with the truck/trailer/load when YOU are driving. It matters not if you were 'under duress'. You decided to make a u-turn, take the lumps that come with the decision.
3) Regardless of if they had cause to fire you - they did. You are required by law and common ethics to return all company property when you leave a company. SNI was within their rights to hit your DAC. You could have avoided it by spending 2.5 hours of your time. You probably even would have been paid for the 50 odd miles.
4) Why in hades are you complaining on a message board 3 YEARS after the fact. 6 months sure, a year okay, but 3 years? Come on.
5) "Hundreds of thousands of dollars and 25 years of driving time?" (I'm assuming you meant 2.5 years). You're claiming that SNI owes you for money you might have made. For a couple of hundred bucks you could have disputed the DAC entry and been driving again. Or you could have found another line of work.
6) You're only 46. How does this make impossible for you "have any chance of a good retirement"? What were you doing for the 20 years before you went driving? If you'd been planning for retirement then you should have had enough to pay for CDL school yourself by the time you hit 40. And why did you pay $10,000 for training anyway? Independent truck schools typically cost $5,000, CDL mills can charge less. You also have 20 years left before retirement. Plenty of time to make up for lost time provided you tighten your belt a little.Joescheppae Q and Lonesome Thank this. -
Several bad choices were made, that's pretty much the bottom line. Having relatives in distress while you're hundreds of miles from home, is a horrible, stressful thing, but being reactionary and making impulse decisions is not only dangerous for you, but those around you. You very well could have compounded your problems with decisions that you made.

Can't you drive local?

Very interesting replies. Thanx for sharing

Okay I have to ask. Why are SNI drivers not allowed to make a U-turn? I would really like to know.
-
Same as with other companies, you block the lanes of traffic and reduce the visibility increasing the likelihood for a fatal run under

how did they know he did a u-turn?
