What part or Co. does I-80 run through? Some grades on the trip, but, does not include "mountainous terrain".
Chicago to Salt Lake City - I80, how is the run ?

the most northern part....the part that is in Wyoming....around the Nebraska, Wyoming, Cheyenne, and Laramie part....goes almost all the way over to the Elk Mountain zone!
Elk Mountain....who wants to let our new Fedexer hear a few stories on that section!???? -
we ran that for 18 months (chicago hights-boise) 2 trips each ways in 6 days with a 53" 6708 paid miles a week
1st thing that comes to mind is BORING...!
the road I-80 is good
IA will not close the freeway no matter how bad it gets in the winter (ice-snow) so you may be driving 20mph across it.
NE gets windy at times but if it gets bad (snow-ice)they just CLOSE the freeway
WY is ALWAYS windy, elk mt. will get snow 5-6 months a year (real hit or miss), mid may this year we had to sit in cheyenne for 7hr so they could get the road clear of snow. sherman mt. is the same, sisters can be as bad. if it get bad they just close the road and parts of the freeway has vriable speed limits (one time it will be 75 and the next time it may be 35)
UT watch your speed at the 80-84 split (echo) seen too many trucks take it to fast (not a pretty sight), 84 is much better than 80 just keep your speed down (miles of 55 mph curves)
this is a good time to start that run as it will give you time to get to know it before the weather gets bad BUT i can tell you that you WILL NOT be making 4 tripa across in the winter, NE-WY close the road to much for you to do it and by closed i mean for 1-2 days at a time.... we've had to sit for as long as 50hr's waiting for 80 to open
like i said we ran it for 18 months and my part of the trip was WY and most of NE 4 times a week.....
hope that helps a little and BTW the only brake check is on I80 in UT and NO emergency ramps but maybe one in UT so keep you speed in check.
it's a good run just boring most of the time -

Must be pretty easy to get hired at Fedex.
If you think you will have trouble sleeping think about how the other guy will feel trying to sleep while you run I-80 thru Colorado. -

elk is bad in the winter(wind-snow-ice at the same time) BUT sisters will scare the brown fecial matter out of ya if your not ready, like going up 2nd sister (dry road) at 70 and in 200ft it goes to sheet ice, 10 mph no jakes and you take you foot off the accelator and the drives slid...! you stop on the sholder to help out a driver that went off the road and the ice is so bad you can't stand up on the road.
i'm not going to tell him the things i've seen driving that road 4 times a week for 18 months, i'll let some of the more experiend drivers tell it to him straight -
Colorado is 7-15 miles south of the I-80 from the NE/WY border all the way across the WY route.
I hope you are both referring to the I-70 through Denver over Vale and Eisenhower passes then down into Grand Junction, CO. -
I said it in jest (thought there was a smilie thingy in there ) because the OP asked about it in his original post.
For those that missed the sarcasim, imagine a driver that has never pulled doubles or run West driving while you tried to sleep.otherhalftw Thanks this. -
Just hope you get to drive Nebraska at night so at least you won't know how boring it is.
