Prescribed Medication

During the dot physical they will send a form to your prescribing doctor stating what you're on, the dosage amount, why you're on it, and whether you can drive on it.

Providing your doctor faxes back the form filled out, you won't have any problems. (if you can, try to get the information before hand as it helps tremendously) Your only downside is you've been on the medicine for such a small amount of time, as a medicine like Welbutrin takes a while to adjust too.

Just make sure you tell them your on it or have been on it (if you get off of it), so it don't mess up your drug test.

You could also look at alternatives outside of medicine to help quit smoking, i used the gum sometime back and it worked well for me.

Side note, I'm on Celexa for depression. I told my recruiter, the nurse, and the dot doctor about it and they didn't care at all as my prescribing doctor said it wouldn't affect me negatively at all.

 

I would recommend trying an alternative method. As I said, any kind of anti-depressant type of medicine takes a while to get used too. You might need a bigger dose or smaller dose after a period of time, or it could adversely affect you. I tried Welbutrin when I was in High School to combat ADHD and in turn it made me extremely hyper.

And not to be devils advocate, but the PSD program is extremely stressful, even just the first week. Then be driving something you have very little experience with. My point being, it'll be a very tough time to try to stay off cigarettes, especially if you just quit.

 

IIRC, Welbutrin is something that cannot be taken by a commercial driver. I'd call a recruiter and ask them if I were you...

 

I was taking the drug klonipin for anxiety. I went to Prime and they sent me back home to see my doctor and get off this medication for 30 days, and then they said that I could come back if all goes well. If anyone is going to Prime to train and is on any type of medication I would check with my recruiter first to see if commercial drivers can be on the type of medication you are on.

 

Wellbutrin is on the list of NOT allowed drugs for CDL drivers. Not to be blunt but if you want to quick smoking and drive bad enough be like NIKE just do it!!!!!! I quit over a week period, MIND over matter you want it you can do it. I chewed a lot of gum ate a bunch of red licorice, and sucks on lolipops/suckers, it was hard but when you want something your MIND can do it before any drug will help you. I DID it so can you. GOOD LUCK.

I also quit dipping the same way when I chewed for a few years.

-----Forgot to mention my friend had smoked for 32 years and quit totally cold turkey when you put your mind to something you can overcome, he just said 1 day I am done with this and quit about 1.5-2 packs a day to none, I think he had a few here and there but just quit, MIND over matter he always tell me even to this day, he did the same with alcohol. He is 4 years off both pretty awesome story.

 

Wellbutrin and Chantix can have adverse effects. Both made me depressed and even suicidal thoughts and I'm not even near that way. I quickly stopped taking them.
Some people it doesn't bother and helps them quit as it blocks the urge to smoke. You never know until you try it.

I just find it weird it's used for depressed people and normal people it can make them depressed. Kind of like putting fire out with fire.

But many smokers are having huge success with Chantix. Lesser amounts with Wellbutrin.

I don't think it's a drug that effects your driving. If you are one that it makes depressed, you simply stop taking it. It would take a month of repeated use and severe depression before you run over a scalehouse or something.
That being said, you could get away with taking it. If something did happened, they look for narcotics and recreational drugs. I know many drivers that took it and drove.

Like Cage said, you have to have your mind right to succeed. There is no miracle drug. Only ones that assist you.
