Got one you can have, probably will be doing several hours of driving tomarrow to swap a RTO for an RT. Forget that big hole against the dash stuff, too confusing, especially in a 15 speed. You arm is flying around everywhere. :biggrin_2559:

That's right driver. I was being coy. But you still split up to a taller gear even if the number is lower, yes. In other words you can split a gear(s) in a DR trans.

I'm not being coy, lol, I've never had anything to do with a DR. So, you just keep shifting until you get back to 1st direct, then just shift like a regular 13? It sounds like your lowest deep reduction is 5th? Man, I'm lost.
Is there a splitter to get into DR?:biggrin_2557:

A fifteen is basically a ten speed with 5 deep reduction gears that are used by fliping the side splitter, or some old ones had it on the dash. You do not have to use the deep reduction gears and if you do you can get to direct at anytime by fliping the side splitter and going down a gear in direct. 3rd DR to 2nd direct, 4thDR to 3rd direct, ect.

Okay, gotcha on that, it's just like splitting gears on the high side, on a 13/18. I've shifted my 18 just like you describe. I'm likely a bit more confused, so I'll ask this; Are all Eaton/Fuller 18's deep reduction and I just don't know what I've got? Most times I drive it just like a 13, with the splitter being in the rearward position when on the lowside. I was thinking that was basically being in the direct position like on the high side, and with the splitter forward, that was like over on the high side.
Really, I'm not trying to complicate things, just trying to understand.:biggrin_25526:

I guess I'm wondering if when on the lowside, with the splitter pushed back, that I'm using deep reduction and didn't know it. So, when I go to the highside, I'm actually going from deep reduction on the low side, to direct on the highside?

Most of those Tranny's are for Heavy Haul, Now days 13's and 18's with the big powerful engines, are not necessary. They can be driven like a 10 speed. But in the old days when you had a Cummings 290 Engine you needed every one of those gears, and truck drivers are a hard breed to change they think they need all the gears. basically a 13 speed is a 10 speed with a 2 speed rear in high range thats all it is, and most guys don't know how to shift them.

Not necessary...But they are real nice to have because they allow you to stay in the sweet spot of the power band and that makes for better fuel mileage as well as being easier on the whole drivetrain.

Burton Cummings was the lead singer in The Guess Who .and Quinn Cummings was a child actress but the engine company is Cummins, There is no "G" in Cummins.

    Really??? A two speed rear?

If you don't know what you're talking about....Don't try to explain things to those of us that do.

That's why I'm questioning everyone about the 18 speed, I forgot all about that 2 speed axle. Well, huh, I must have 36 gears and not know that either. Thanks for the enlightenment.:biggrin_2554:

Wow, I hope my questions don't sound as dumb as those statements, if they do, well, ah, er, sorry.

yes bigjohn you are a hundred percent rite. Out here we haul over a 100 000 pounds and the 18 is just perfect, yet we do haul over a 100 000 pounds with 10 speeds as well but its just not rite.

I agree that the 13 speed is perfect for your high ways.

13 and 18 speeds just give you the abillity to stay in the sweet spot and yet you can still progresive shift aswell.
